***********Elara’s POV***********
I couldn't sleep, knowing Adrian was still outside. I kept seeing his car parked on my street. The moon was out, and his car was just sitting there under the streetlamp. Was he waiting for me to come out? Was he watching to make sure I was okay? Or was he just crazy?
Finally, I had to do something. I put on a jacket and stepped outside. The night air was cold, but it felt good. Adrian's car lights turned on right away. He got out and walked toward me.
"It's late, Adrian," I said, my voice low. "What are you doing here?"
"I know, Elara," he said, his voice soft and tired. "I just wanted you to understand me. I want you to know who I really am."
I wrapped my arms around myself. "You have to go home, Adrian. Please, just go."
He looked at me, and his face was full of sadness. It was the first time I had ever seen him look so... helpless.
"Elara, I want you to know that I truly love and care about you," he said. "Ethan can never be the right person for you. Can't you see it? He's a game player. He'll hurt you. I'll protect you."
I was speechless. I didn't know what to say. His words hit me hard. He was so honest. It was nothing like the fight he had with Ethan.
"Elara," he said again, taking a step closer. "Please understand me and agree with me. Let me be the one you trust."
"Adrian, this is not the right time for this," I said. "You really have to go home."
He looked down, and for a moment, I thought he would just leave. But then he looked up again, a small, hopeful look in his eyes. "Okay. Can I at least get a hug?" he asked.
I didn't think about it. I just hugged him. His body was warm. I could feel his heart beating hard against my chest. It felt real. It felt… safe.
"Good night, Elara," he whispered.
"Good night," I replied.
I watched him get in his car and drive away. As his tail lights disappeared down the street, I went back inside. I could still feel the warmth of his body. It was a warmth I hadn't felt in a long time. It made me feel like maybe, just maybe, I shouldn't have let him go.
The next day at the office was so peaceful. It was the first time I had felt calm in a long time. There were no phone calls, no surprise visits, no arguments. It was like the Alden boys didn't even exist. I got so much work done. I even had time to grab a coffee and just enjoy a quiet moment. I thought about the night before. Was I really starting to feel something for Adrian? Or was I just tired of fighting with him? I didn't have an answer.
At about 2 p.m., the peace ended.
Ethan walked into my office. He was wearing a shirt that made his eyes look even brighter. He had a big, charming smile on his face.
"Hey, Elara," he said.
"Hi, Ethan," I responded, my heart already starting to beat faster.
"I just came to tell you about my family's charity gala," he said. "It's happening tomorrow night. I want you to walk with me and stay by my side."
My peaceful day was over. I was back in their war.
"Why will she stay by your side?" a new voice said. It was Adrian. He walked into my office, his face tight and angry. "She's not one of your pawns or a toy to move around with."
Ethan's smile got even bigger. "You know one thing about you, Adrian? You always think you're perfect and good. You're nothing but a piece of shit."
"Stop it, both of you!" I yelled. My voice was loud. They both froze and looked at me. "Why are you always trying to make choices for me? It's always about what you guys want and not about what I want myself."
They were both silent. The anger was gone from their faces, replaced with a stunned look.
"I'm going to your family's charity gala," I said, my voice shaking. "But I'm coming on my own. Not for either of you. I need a break from both of you, please."
The moment I said those words, something in Adrian and Ethan seemed to snap. The air in my office felt thick and heavy.
"You're making a mistake, Elara," Adrian said, his voice low and dangerous. He looked at me, then at Ethan. "He's dangerous. Don't go with him."
"Don't listen to his bullshit, Elara," Ethan shot back, taking a step closer. "He's just scared you'll see who he really is. The real asshole is him."
Adrian took a step forward, his fists clenching at his sides. "I'm the asshole? Look at you, Ethan. You're a user. You'll say anything to get what you want, no matter who you hurt."
"And you're a hypocrite!" Ethan yelled, his voice getting louder. "You pretend to be so good, but you're just as bad. You want her for yourself, just like me. The only difference is I'm honest about it."
"Shut up!" I screamed. "I said stop! This is my office! This is my life! You both treat me like I'm a prize for you to fight over. I'm a person, not a thing!"
Adrian and Ethan left my office, but the tension they created stayed behind. I sat at my desk, trying to work, but my mind was a mess. Why did they always have to fight? Why was I the cause of it?
Later that day, Adrian texted me. "I'm sorry. I'll see you tomorrow." I didn't respond.
A few minutes later, Ethan texted me. "I know you're mad. I'll see you tomorrow." I didn't respond to him either.
I had made my decision. I was going to the gala, and I was going alone. I was going to show them both that I was not a prize to be won. I was a person who could make her own choices.
