Ian looked down at his lap, shoulders sinking beneath the weight of guilt.
“Not much, really,” he returned, his voice barely above a whisper. “He was injured and in need of some medical attention, so he was taken to a hospital while I stayed back and tended to some of the sick and injured children.”
My brows furrowed. That didn’t make sense. “Didn’t you go visit him at the hospital?”
Ian’s jaw twitched. He hesitated before lifting his gaze to mine, shame darkening his eyes like a thundercloud rolling in.
“No.” His voice cracked. “My wolf wanted to so badly… he kept pulling toward him, clawing inside me like he was going insane. But I suppressed him. I forced him to quiet down because you’re the only one I want, Amber.”
My breath caught.
