With a slither, the door swung shut again, taking with it the illumination that had escaped from the streetlights just along the curb. Long shadows crept across the floor, but no sound disturbed the silence that soaked from within. In the rafters, the soft scuttling of a mouse’s feet betrayed the only indication of life. He paused at the mouth of the atrium, gazing up the center aisle at the towering cross behind the pulpit. Sanctified ground didn’t weaken vampires, but the proliferation of holy symbols usually succeeded in keeping them away from churches anyway.
