Chapter 23The sun was low on the horizon by the time she found the church again. Though she’d lived in the Bay Area for years now, most of Maya’s time was spent at the hospital, with little opportunity to explore beyond the boundaries of official functions. The meager social life she’d had was limited to the movies and a handful of restaurants, so winding her way through the steep hills of San Francisco was something new to her. She left the books in the car. They were tossed haphazardly in the back seat, as if she’d put them there ages ago and forgotten.
