I had waited. And Gabriel was supposed to listen to me. I had rehearsed the moment a hundred times in my head. I wanted to see what his reaction would be, and also how she was going to keep acting like she is that important when he decided to let her go. Some students were already watching us, as I thought about her, which made it a good thing for me because I wanted him to embarrass her. “I don’t care if she’s keeping secrets from me,” Gabriel said. His voice was calm, but there was a firmness in it that froze me in place. Every student around us seemed to stop moving for a second, their eyes on us.
