Perfecting the Plan

(Rebecca) When I was a little girl, my life took an unexpected turn when tragedy struck. My parents, who were brave and selfless warriors, were sadly killed in action by rogues, leaving me orphaned and alone. It was a devastating blow that shattered my world, but little did I know, it would also be the catalyst for resilience and strength that would shape the person I would become. Thankfully, I was taken in by a caring and nurturing orphanage that became my second family. They provided me with a safe and loving environment, offering the stability and support I needed during such a difficult time. The orphanage became my home, and the other children there became my brothers and sisters. We formed deep bonds, sharing our hopes, dreams, and challenges as we navigated the ups and downs of life together. The staff at the orphanage played a crucial role in my upbringing, providing guidance, education, and nurturing care that helped me rebuild my shattered world. When I turned 18, I embarked on a new chapter of my life by enrolling in college. It was a time filled with excitement and nerves as I left behind the familiar comforts of the orphanage and embraced the unknown. Little did I know that fate had a curious twist in store for me. Among the sea of new faces and diverse personalities, one person stood out from the crowd – Devon, one of the Alpha's sons. With his commanding presence and magnetic charisma, Devon captured my attention from the moment I laid eyes on him, it was as if the goddess herself played a part. As we got to know each other, I discovered that he possessed a unique blend of confidence, intelligence, and a drive for success. Our shared journey through college brought us closer, as we supported each other through the challenges and celebrated our triumphs together. Devon's support and encouragement became a huge part of my college experience, and he pushed me to exceed my own expectations. Looking back, I can't help but marvel at how a chance encounter with Devon, the Alpha's son, forever changed the trajectory of my college years and beyond. I knew deep down, before I found out about the Alpha's choice in heir, that Devon would be the perfect Alpha. When the Alpha officially declared Christian his heir, I was hit with a wave of frustration and anger, and it surged through my veins. I couldn't help but feel that this decision went against everything that was fair and just. After all, it was Devon who, by birthright, should have been the rightful heir to the pack. He had trained tirelessly, honing his skills and proving his loyalty time and time again. Yet, it seemed that Christian, with his silver tongue and political maneuvering, had managed to sway the Alpha's opinion in his favor. That was my mindset, anyway. It was a bitter pill to swallow, witnessing such a blatant disregard for tradition and merit. It ignited a fire within me, fueling my determination to challenge this decision and fight for what I believed was right. From the moment I laid eyes on Christian, an unsettling feeling washed over me, and a deep sense of dislike formed in my gut. It was the first day of the Alpha's ball, an event that was highly anticipated in our community. Devon, my newly bonded mate, had insisted on accompanying me to the ball, and it was on that very night that I was introduced to Christian, Devon's younger brother. As soon as he stepped into the room, he released an air of arrogance and superiority. I knew there was something about him that rubbed me the wrong way. His piercing gaze, cold and calculating, made me feel as if I was being scrutinized and found lacking. Perhaps it was his condescending smile or the way he carried himself with an air of entitlement, but I despised Christian from that very moment. I knew that our paths would continue to cross, leading to unforeseen consequences that would challenge my initial goal of becoming Luna. When Devon burst into our room with a mix of excitement and nervousness on his face, I couldn't help but be curious about what had made him so worked up. I placed my magazine in my lap and waited for him to speak. As he caught his breath, he explained that his father wanted him in the study to discuss an unexpected request. It turns out, his father, our Alpha, wanted Devon to be the one to escort the southern princess to the highly anticipated founders' ball. The ball was a prestigious event that celebrated the rich history and tradition of our community, and being chosen as an escort was a great honor. As Devon shared his father's reasoning behind this request, I couldn't help but be touched by the uneasiness of the request, so Devon planned to use this to his advantage. First he would reject me as his mate and, with a little help from a local witch, get a love potion to help manipulate her feelings towards him. I was OK with it, because in the end he was doing this for us. We would use the princess for our own gain, and achieve what we needed and wanted. What I didn't tell Devon was I had a plan of my own. I shared only the basics of my plan, but not the full extent. After what the alpha yelled at me and his actions towards me, I knew he was going to die by my hands and Christian would take the fall. "OK, so now that everything's out in the open between us, who's going to reject who?" I asked, tapping my foot on the carpet. "I, Devon Sinclair, son of Alpha Charles Sinclair, reject you, Rebecca Martin, as my fated mate." The words left Devon's mouth before I had a chance to react. The tight sensation in my chest, and the pain that shot through my entire body sent me into an agonizing scream. Devon reacted fast quickly, covering my face with the pillow, minimizing my screams. It felt like an eternity before the pain finally seized and Devon’s finally started. We stayed locked in our room for nearly six hours before the pain was finally gone. Our bond was still there, since I could feel it, but in order for our plan to work in our favor, this had to happen first. Devon ran his fingers through my hair, lifting my chin so that my eyes would meet his. “Are you OK?” Devon asked tenderly. I nodded my head, I didn’t want him to know that I was still feeling the pain within my chest. I knew that Alpha Charles would pay dearly for me feeling this pain. “Yes, I’m fine. Let’s just stay focused, you need to go pick up your suit, and I need to go get our potions from the witch.” I said, trying to steady my breath. “Hey, I love you, you know that,” Devon said, before walking out of the room. This plan had to work, it must work.
