Chapter 2: Hope?

1095 Words
Sophie woke up as early as four in the morning, the darkness outside mirroring the despair in her heart. The silence was oppressive, punctuated only by the occasional creak of the old wooden floorboards. She got ready for her work in the Tao's mansion, her movements mechanical, her mind numb. The air was thick with the scent of decay and rot, a constant reminder of the hopelessness that surrounded her. She hurriedly got ready and as she ate, the food tasted bitter in her mouth, like ash and regret. The memories of the man who disvirgined her came rushing back, like a floodgate opening. She felt abused and used, but his words echoed in her mind, 'I will compensate you for this, you won't regret it...' She knew she had to find him, but the problem was she didn't know his face, and she had no connection whatsoever, no one to rely on. She was alone, adrift in a sea of despair. She then left. The mansion loomed before her, its grandeur a cruel mockery of her own insignificance. The chandelier above cast a dim light on her face, like a spotlight on a prisoner. She began her chores, her movements robotic, her mind elsewhere. The sound of her own heartbeat echoed in her ears, a reminder of her own mortality. As she cleaned, the dust and dirt seemed to cling to her like a bad omen. She felt like a ghost haunting the halls, invisible and insignificant. The party hall was a blur of noise and color, a cacophony of laughter and music. But Sophie's heart was heavy, her mind consumed by thoughts of escape. Roger, the mansion's pet, a golden retriever, came to meet her, his tail wagging, his eyes filled with warmth. He was a beacon of hope in a sea of despair, a reminder that there was still good in the world. "Aw....my love, I missed you, I know you missed me too," she patted and rubbed him, feeling a sense of connection, of belonging. Later that day..... Sophie was cleaning up the kitchen in peace and her thoughts but the peace was short-lived, as Megara's voice cut through the silence like a whip. "Darling" she cooed, hugging the man who came in. "How are you? I've missed you." He's voice sounded calm yet fierce, like a storm brewing. "It's only been a day, come on baby," Megara said, then pecked him. "A day without you," he said, smirking, then Megara giggled and led him in. Sophie's heart skipped a beat as she saw him, he felt really familiar. She felt a wave of nausea wash over her, her mind racing with memories. "Fiancé?" she thought, her heart sinking. "How could Megara be engaged to him?" She couldn't understand the connection between them, but she knew she had to be careful. As she served them, Sophie couldn't help but steal glances at the man. He seemed oblivious to her presence, but she knew better. She felt a shiver run down her spine and her heart racing with fear and didn't know the reason. Megara's voice broke the silence, her words dripping with malice. "Don't you dare look at him again, if I catch you staring at him, even though it's for a second, I will punish you immensely, am I clear?" Sophie nodded, her eyes cast downward, her heart heavy with fear. The rest of the day passed in a blur, Sophie's mind racing with thoughts of escape. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but she was willing to try. She had to try, for herself, for her grandmother, for the life they deserved. As she lay in bed that night, Sophie made a promise to herself - she would find a way out, no matter what it took. The darkness outside seemed less oppressive, the silence less suffocating. She knew she had a long road ahead, but she was ready to face it head-on. As she lay in the store room waiting to go home or to be sent an errand, Sophie's mind raced with thoughts of escape. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but she was willing to try. She had to try, for herself, for her grandmother, for the life they deserved. She thought about the man who had taken her virginity, and how Megara could be engaged to another person despite her soon to be marriage. She couldn't understand the connection between them, but she knew she had to be careful. Sophie's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps outside the store room. She held her breath, wondering if it was Megara or the man. But the footsteps passed by, and Sophie let out a sigh of relief. She knew she couldn't stay hidden forever, but for now, it was her only option. The next day, Sophie continued with her chores, her mind still racing with thoughts of escape. She knew she had to be careful, that one misstep could mean disaster. But she couldn't shake the feeling that she was running out of time. As she cleaned the living room, Sophie noticed a piece of paper on the floor. She picked it up, wondering if it was important. But as she read the words, her heart skipped a beat. It was a note, addressed to her. "I know you're looking for a way out," the note read. "I can help you. Meet me in the garden at midnight." Sophie's heart was racing as she read the note. She didn't know if she could trust the writer, she wondered who the person was. She had to take the chance, no matter how small or how careless she might be now. The rest of the day passed in a blur, Sophie's mind racing with thoughts of the note and the writer. She knew she had to be careful, but she couldn't shake the feeling that this was her only chance. As the clock struck midnight, Sophie made her way to the garden. She was nervous, her heart racing with anticipation. But as she saw the back of a man waiting for her, she felt she had made the right decision. "Are you ready to escape?" he asked, his voice low and urgent. Sophie nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew she was taking a chance, but she was ready to take the leap. Before she could answer, Megara called out for her and her heels hitting the floor was held. "Sophie, what are you doing here?" Megara asked as anger and hatred filled her eyes.
