Chapter 4: Against me

1017 Words
Sophie slowly opened her eyes, groggily taking in her surroundings. She was still in the store room, the cold floor beneath her a harsh reminder of her reality. Her body ached all over, a testament to the cruelty she had endured at the hands of Megara and her mother. The small window high above her head cast a faint glow, signaling the early morning hours. With a sense of urgency, Sophie got up and made her way to the kitchen, her eyes scanning the clock on the wall - 4:05 AM. She knew she had to move quickly, before the household stirred. Downstairs, she hastened to the bathroom, her heart racing with step she took on the marble floor. She locked the door behind her and began to bathe, trying to wash away the pain and fear that clung to her like a shroud. Her gaze fell upon her reflection in the mirror, and she couldn't help but notice the stark contrast between her smooth, pale skin and the life she was forced to lead. The only scars she bore were the ones inflicted by Megara and her mother - a constant reminder of their cruelty. As she dressed in fresh clothes, Sophie steeled herself for the long day ahead. Her stomach growled with hunger, but she knew better than to indulge in food before completing her chores. The risk of punishment was too great. With a heavy heart, she began cleaning the house, her movements mechanical as she tried to push aside the thoughts of her impending marriage. An hour passed, and Sophie's hunger became unbearable. She succumbed to her cravings, devouring the leftover dinner from the previous night and two pieces of the doughnut she had baked for Megara's fiancé. As she reached for the last piece, Roger's cries pierced the air, and Sophie's empathy got the better of her. She filled his plate to the brim, remembering that he hadn't eaten since the previous day. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes as she thought about leaving him behind, about being married off against her will. "I hope they won't starve you to death, I will miss you so very much," she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion as she pecked his back. The memory of the mysterious man who had vanished yesterday lingered in her mind, but Sophie pushed it aside, focusing on the tasks at hand. She had to finish her work before anyone else woke up. With renewed determination, Sophie tackled the remaining chores, her mind racing with thoughts of escape and freedom. But for now, she was trapped, bound by the chains of her circumstances. As she worked, the darkness outside slowly gave way to the dawn, casting a pale light over the house - a stark contrast to the darkness that lurked within its walls. Megara's mocking laughter echoed in Sophie's ears as she handed her a set of clothes. "Take these and get ready to meet your husband and soulmate," she sneered, her eyes gleaming with malice. Sophie felt a surge of discomfort at the prospect of leaving, yet she yearned to be free from the Tao family's grasp. Her impatience to depart warred with her trepidation about the unknown. Mrs. Tao's grip on Sophie's hair tightened as she dragged her back. "Don't try to act smart, if anyone finds out about this switch, I'll make sure you regret it for the rest of your life." Sophie's eyes stung with unshed tears as she collected the clothes, her mind racing with the implications of her situation. As soon as Mrs. Tao released her hair, Sophie fled to the guest room downstairs, the clothes clutched in her hand. She changed into the dress, her fingers trembling as she fastened the buttons. The garment was beautiful, though not as extravagant as Megara's attire. Sophie admired her reflection, the jewelry and tied-back hair transforming her into a stranger. Her gaze fell upon the scar on her neck, now invisible. Memories of the mysterious night with the stranger flooded her mind, and a sudden, searing pain pierced her chest. Sophie gasped, her hand flying to her heart as if to contain the anguish. She doubled over, her vision blurring, and her breath coming in ragged gasps. "What's happening to me?" she whispered, her voice laced with fear. "I hope it's not serious... I have no money for a check-up." The pain subsided, leaving Sophie shaken. She composed herself, her posture straightening as she exited the room. In the living room, a new figure stood, a man with a kind face and a driver's uniform. Sophie's gaze darted around, searching for Megara, but she was nowhere to be found. Mrs. Tao stood nearby, her expression a mask of concern. "Are you Megara Tao?" the driver asked, his eyes locked on Sophie. She hesitated, unsure how to respond. The name felt foreign, yet familiar, as if it belonged to her. With a deep breath, Sophie mustered her confidence. "Y...yes, I... I am Megara. And you are?" The driver's expression remained neutral. "That won't be necessary. I'm your driver. I'll take you to your destination now." Mrs. Tao stepped forward, her grip on Sophie's arm tightening. "I know my daughter made a mistake, and now she's paying for it, but please treat my daughter well," Mrs. Tao said, her voice dripping with false sincerity. Sophie recognized the act, but a part of her longed for genuine maternal concern. The driver nodded. "Don't worry, ma'am. Now, Lady Megara, follow me." As they departed, Mrs. Tao's parting words echoed in Sophie's mind: "Don't you dare mess up, or I'll make all your punishments worse." The driver led Sophie to a sleek black car, its interior luxurious and intimidating. As they drove away from the Tao estate, Sophie felt a mix of emotions: fear, uncertainty, and a glimmer of hope. She was leaving the Tao family's cruelty behind, but what lay ahead? And who was this husband she was being forced to marry? The questions swirled in her mind like a vortex, pulling her into the unknown.
