Chapter Nine Elizabeth stretched her back and neck as she opened her eyes. How long had she been sleeping? It took her a moment to realize the car wasn’t moving. The engine had been cut, and instead of the cool air from the car’s air-conditioning, there was a soft breeze causing several strands of her hair to tickle her face. She turned to the driver seat. The window on Ian’s side of the car was wound down, and he had his elbow propped against the window ledge as he stared out into the distance. Across the small road where the car had parked was a wooden fence guarding a decrepit house. Even the soft, mellow orange from the brightening sky did nothing to cast it in a better light.
