He moves a seat for me to sit in then returns to his own seat, he types on the computer then clears his throat. “Name on the account?” “Mrs Isabelle Eve Evans.” “If I was to fly, what would I be?” I laugh softly. “A bald eagle for none would see me coming.” He nods. “If I were you and you were me then who would you be?” “I would be me, for none but me would be me.” He nods. “Last one, if I were a story character who you and I be?” This brought tears to my eyes, I love my nanno and she would always read me the little mermaid. “Ariel and Flander, together forever.” I say sadly. He nods again. “So how can I help you today?” “I would like to withdraw $25,000,000.00 from the account, and I will be sending directions as to what to do with the rest in the next few days.” “What about the safety deposit boxes?” “I will retrieve those now as well please.” I didn’t know about the boxes but I just pretend like I do. “Please follow me then.” He leads me thru a different door and into a room filled with safety boxes, then goes up to the wall and pulls off 3 keys. “Boxes, 913,914 and 915.” I will give you a few minutes, just knock on my door when your ready.” Then he hands the keys and leaves the room, I slowly open and pull out all 3 boxes and lay then on the long metal table. My hands are trembling. The first has a single letter in it.
“My dearest Flander,
If you are reading this then I have finally passed, I hope you know just how much I love you. I will always be with you, if you’re ever missing me just dream of me and I will be there with you. I hope by now your parents have told you this, you were adopted when you were days old, your grandfather was a world class doctor as you well now and he was given you by a family in Hamilton. We have kept you safe and loved because to us you are blood. Inside this envelope is everything I have ever collected on your birth family, I hope this helps you. But always know that I love you and one day I hope to see your beautiful smile again but not too soon.
Love always your Ariel.”
I wiped away the tears and put it back in the envelope without looking at the rest, the second held her wedding rings and her favourite jewellery and the third held bonds and share market reports on stock in my name. I put it all in my bag and put the boxes back away. Before knocking on the manager’s door again he opened it and let me in, he had me sign some paperwork before handing me 2 large black bags. “I hope your business has been helpful and we so do look forward to future dealings with you.” He hands me a card then walks me out to the main floor, I say my goodbye then go outside and put the cases in my saddle bags on the bike. I ride over to the Four Seasons Hotel and book into a room. I ask for a room on the top floor. “That room is very pricing, how will you be paying for it?” I pull the money. “Here is $3000 for the room and another $2000 if you put any name there so it can’t be traced to me.” He nods frantically then hands me a card key.
