Rain poured relentlessly from the heavens as the execution party journeyed through the forest. Captain Trenolx rode ahead, occasionally turning to glance at the princess with a mocking smile. To him, Diana was finally going to pay dearly for rejecting his earlier advances.
With his hands resting on his hips, he exchanged cruel jokes with his guards, making sarcastic remarks about the princess. Their laughter and cheerful mockery filled the forest, making an already dreadful journey even more unbearable.
Diana sat silently, her wrists tightly bound. She had always despised Captain Trenolx. She could still vividly remember the rumours surrounding him—stories of how he had taken advantage of several young women, leaving some of them with children. Yet King Edward had never taken any meaningful steps to bring him to justice.
Little wonder the captain had never liked Diana. He had little sympathy for women and seemed to take pleasure in their suffering.
Even more disturbing was the fact that King Edward, despite being the ruler of the Light Kingdom, was himself consumed by corruption, injustice, and an unrelenting desire for control.
Remembering everything made Diana's heart ache. Her thoughts drifted towards her family, especially her younger brothers and her mother. She was certain they would never stop grieving for her. She wished she could hold them close one last time and whisper comforting words into their ears, but such a wish was now beyond her reach.
Tears slowly streamed down her beautiful face.
She was exhausted. The long journey, the endless torment of her thoughts, and the tight restraints around her wrists had taken a terrible toll on her. Her hands were beginning to feel numb, and her strength was gradually fading.
At this rate, she feared she might not even survive long enough to reach the execution ground.
The soldiers continued laughing among themselves, with their captain joining in without the slightest concern.
One of the guards eventually turned towards her.
"Any final prayers, Princess?"
"You know, it would do us some good to hear your charming and sweet words," another added.
The others burst into laughter.
"Or perhaps it would be more entertaining if she suddenly transformed into a wolf and devoured us all like a heroine!" Captain Trenolx shouted mockingly.
The soldiers cheered and laughed, thoroughly enjoying themselves.
Diana did not even raise her head.
Perhaps they were right. If she were truly destined for something extraordinary, why couldn't she save herself from these miserable men?
Or perhaps everything happening to her was simply nature's cruel design.
She refused to respond. Instead, more tears slipped down her cheeks as she kept her head bowed.
Amid the soldiers' laughter, Captain Trenolx suddenly approached and crouched before her. With a sinister smile, he lifted her chin, forcing her to look at him. He noticed the deep sadness in her eyes and spoke in a strangely gentle voice.
"Don't worry... Everything will be fine soon. I promise."
He gave her a final mocking smile before rising and rejoining the others.
Hours later, they finally arrived at a clearing deep within the forest.
The captain ordered the guards to drag Diana forward.
"This is where it ends," he announced.
He stepped forward, wearing an exaggerated expression of importance.
"It would be my honour, on behalf of my dear princess, to declare this event officially open!"
He paused, allowing the soldiers to laugh before continuing.
"And please, don't forget to extend my regards to my father. Farewell, then."
He bowed mockingly. The other soldiers followed his example.
Captain Trenolx remained where he stood, watching Diana's approaching fate with a faint smile playing on his lips.
Diana's knees trembled.
The executioner stepped forward and unsheathed his sword. His expression showed no mercy.
Well, this was it.
She closed her eyes.
Then came a scream.
A soldier was suddenly hurled through the air, crashing violently against a nearby tree.
Everyone froze.
What was that?
Before anyone could make sense of what had happened, a dark figure emerged from the shadows.
He was tall and broad-shouldered, with a sword strapped across his back. His piercing blue eyes burned with determination and an unmistakable sense of courage.
"Release her," he commanded calmly, his voice low enough not to disturb the birds perched in the surrounding trees.
Captain Trenolx burst into laughter.
"And who might you be? A wolf, perhaps?"
The stranger offered a slight smile.
"Someone who dislikes cowards. Now, as I said, release her."
"Oh, come on! Please, don't make me laugh. You're nothing but a pathetic young boy. Run along, little one, before you lose your head trying to play the hero!"
He finished with a stern expression, glaring at the stranger.
The young man remained unmoved.
"You leave me no choice. I suppose I'll have to show you the hero you've never encountered before."
The soldiers charged.
Within moments, chaos erupted.
Diana was thrown roughly to the ground. She struggled to lift her head and see what was happening, but her vision had become terribly blurred. The soldiers appeared in twos and threes before her eyes, making it impossible to distinguish one person from another.
She tried desperately to remain conscious, but her strength was failing.
Gradually, her eyelids grew heavy, and everything faded into darkness.
The stranger, however, moved with incredible speed.
His sword flashed like silver lightning as he fought off the approaching soldiers. One after another, they fell unconscious beneath his powerful strikes.
Captain Trenolx attempted to flee.
But before he could escape, a single strike knocked the weapon from his hand. Terrified, he abandoned his men and ran into the forest, desperately searching for safety.
Moments later, silence returned to the clearing.
The mysterious warrior approached Diana and quickly cut through her restraints. He carefully lifted her and carried her to a nearby stream, where he gently washed the dirt from her face and hands.
Suddenly, Diana coughed and stirred.
He helped her sit upright.
"You are safe now," he assured her.
Diana slowly opened her eyes and stared at him.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Something about the encounter felt strangely significant, although neither could explain it.
"My name is Alex," he finally said, breaking the silence.
"Um... I'm Diana," she replied, still struggling to regain her senses.
A small smile crossed his face.
"I know."
"Really?" she asked quietly, curious about how he knew.
"Well, I must confess that I've been listening to your conversations throughout the journey. I happened to overhear almost everything the soldiers discussed."
For the first time since her arrest, Diana felt a little relief. A small spark of hope began to return to her heart.
They eventually rose to their feet and stood facing each other.
"Thank you, Alex. I'm truly grateful. No one has ever stood up for me the way you just did. Not even my own father."
"Well, it's nothing compared to what you've done for our kind," Alex replied.
"Your kind? I've never seen you before."
Alex studied her face for a moment.
"You know..." he began, then paused. "Well, never mind. So, they really intended to execute their own princess?"
He quickly changed the subject.
Diana noticed that he was concealing something, but since they had only just met, she decided not to press him.
"Yes. They're ruthless, aren't they? It was my father's order. He has never liked me, and I doubt he ever will," she said, her gaze drifting towards the distant trees.
She proceeded to tell Alex everything that had happened, explaining the events that had led to her arrest and how she had narrowly escaped death.
Alex listened attentively, offering words of encouragement. He eventually told her that he would gladly accompany her and help her face the kingdom.
Diana hesitated.
She knew returning to Silvercrest would be dangerous, especially after everything her father had done. Nevertheless, she understood that she could not abandon her rightful place without a fight.
"By the way, don't you have to return home?" she asked.
Alex's eyes remained fixed on her as he considered his response.
"Well, since I've come across a damsel in such unfortunate distress, I suppose I have no choice but to pledge my loyalty and help you achieve your dreams."
He smiled softly.
Diana felt genuinely relieved. It was comforting to discover that someone could still recognise the goodness in her and was willing to stand beside her despite the danger.
"I'm honoured," she replied.
"The pleasure is mine, Princess."
"So, do we have an alliance?" he teased.
"Oh, come on, Alex. Of course!" she replied with a laugh.
"You see, I've always wanted a companion," he confessed.
Diana responded with a warm smile.
Neither of them knew what the future held, but their meeting marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey—one filled with danger, unexpected discoveries, and challenges neither could yet imagine.
Alex extended his hand towards Diana.
She accepted it without hesitation.
However, beneath Alex's expression of happiness lay a trace of guilt. He had always wanted companionship, but he was not prepared for the dangerous secret that would soon come to light.
I will face it, he thought solemnly.
Together, they disappeared into the depths of the forest.
Above them, the full moon shone brightly against the dark blue sky, surrounded by countless glittering stars.
Neither of them realised that their unexpected meeting would one day alter the fate of kingdoms.
