Luci awoke in a small, cold, musty room. The curtains above her bed were filled with holes, letting in the morning light. The bed was a sack filled with straw, placed on the ground just below the window. A small wool blanket and straw pillow were the only comforts of the bed. Two other figures laid in the room. They were small children, no older than 10, still sleeping on the wooden floor. A doorway with a large piece of cloth had separated their room from the next. Luci rose from her bed, tiptoeing past the children and through the doorway, smelling the air. It was filled with the smell of burning wood and eggs. "Ah, she awakens." Her mother stood over the fire, cooking. The room was mostly dark near her as the curtains were drawn closed. She dressed in a beige dress, colorfully patche
