Chapter Three

1819 Words
Prologue-Twin Brother Derek rushed down another shot of whisky and made random jokes with Nate, his personal assistant and friend for years. With blushed face and blurry eyes, he was a little bit high. He should be because he had just merged another tech start-up and this definitely made his firm greater and more unrivaled in the field of artificial intelligence. However, his excitement was interrupted by a phone call. A phone call from his best friend Alex, an attending in Devos Grace Hospital. He told Derek that a patient was sent to the emergency and that patient looked exactly the same to Derek. “I was kind of freaked out when I saw his face. I examined his body but noticed there was no dragon tattoo in his forearm.” Alex relieved and took a deep breath, “So I immediately called you to check. God Bless! It’s not you!” “Are you sure? The same face?” “100% positive. Unbelievably, right?” Alex replied excitedly “There are only two possibilities: he either be your twin brother or a clone.” “Twin brother?” Derek stood up from the couch and narrowed his eyes. His memory went back to the rainy night twenty years ago. The memory he tried to dispose of but kept hunting him at night. “I’ll be there right away.” Derek hung up the phone. Nate was watching and listening all the time. He was aware of something unusual. He did not ask anything but simply handed the coat and car key to Derek when he was leaving. Devos Grace Hospital is located in the Northeast and it took Derek over forty minutes to be there. His memory of the rainy night kept popping out. It’s weird that the scene and the detail were still so vivid and clear as if that happened minutes ago. This was the past that he never wanted to think of or to be asked for because that was the source of his childhood misery. He did not and cannot let it go even though he is now a billionaire. With wealth and fame, he was the most prestigious bachelor in town. But deep in heart, he was still the boy left alone in the wild by his mother on a rainy night. Alex was waiting at the entrance and immediately led Derek to the VIP room. He opened the door and pointed at the man lying on the bed. “Told you.” Derek walked towards the man, slowly and steadily. He turned the man’s face to his side, leaned forward, and closely looked at the man’s face for a few minutes. Yes, they looked the same. “Is he your twin brother? “Alex asked, “I know you are raised up by Bishop but what about your family before that?” “Yes, he is John, two minutes elder than me. He is part of the family and of course his mother.” Derek said emotionlessly and grabbed a chair to sit down next to the bed. Alex nodded “It’s quite difficult to get back to your family again after all these years.” “Getting back?” Derek sneered “Bishop is my family now. The only one.” Alex soon realized that he was wrong. Derek was adopted by Bishop when he was eight years old. What would an 8-year-old boy leave his mother? Either Derek got lost or be abandoned. From Derek’s words, the later one clearly was the right answer. Revengeful and merciless, Derek may not kill them but will avenge to torture them for sure. “What are you going to do?” Alex asked uneasily but got no answer from Derek. “Whatever it is, do it quickly. The man will wake up 24 hours later. His assistant was slightly injured and was admitted as well. “ Derek raised eyebrows and stared at Alex. Alex was nervous. He knew Derek was planning something evil. He lifted his glasses and warned Derek, “this is a public hospital with 24-hour CCTV everywhere. Don’t take risk to do something regretful.” Derek was amused by his words and laughed, “You think I’m gonna kill him? Seriously?” Alex looked into Derek’s eyes. His eyes were really gifted from God. Watery, insightful, and shining, his eyes outclass all men and even women Alex has ever known. These eyes with unrivaled beauty and the enchanting smile, however, send chills up his spine. “Okay, I give up! You are impossible. Just tell me your plan and what should I do?” Alex shrugged. “I absolutely need your help.” Derek pulled another chair beside and sat Alex down. “Tell his assistant that his head was injured and therefore lost his memories in the accident.” “And then? Alex was confused. “I’ll transfer him to another hospital” Derek picked up the man’s identity card and wallet. His eyes narrowed when he opened the wallet. It was a photo of the man and a middle-aged woman, the one who abandoned him in the rainy winter night. “Okay. But it does not make any sense that a patient disappears from the hospital without reason. It is a big issue. How can I explain it to the chief?” Alex sighed and doubted Derek’s plan. “Unreasonable disappearance?” Derek smiled,” Don’t worry. You’ll get another one with the same face.” “…” Derek took out the phone and dialed Nate’s number. “Nate, I need you to come Devos Grace Hospital now…”  Chapter Two-Becoming John Derek and John are twins, but Derek was abandoned by her mother when he was 8 years old. He did not know why her mother made such a decision, and this was the only chance for him to figure it out. A chance endowed by the almighty, and he would not let it go. John came to Devos for a business conference but unfortunately, his car crashed on his way to the airport. Nate arrived within half an hour. He did not ask anything when he saw John as if he was not curious at all. He simply followed Derek’s order and helped him transfer John to a private hospital founded by Derek. The hospital was located inside a nursing home. John was relocated to a VIP suite with doctors on call all day. “Ouch” John could not help moaning when he woke up. Dizzy, pale and feeble, he stared at the white ceiling for a long while to come to himself. Before he figured out his whereabout, a manly and deep voice echoed. “Awake now?” Confused as John was, he could clearly feel the contempt in the tone. He clumsily and slowly turned his head towards the right and completely shocked to find a man with the same face. The face that gave him goosebump and his eyes were fixed on Derek without a blink. It seems he wants to find something from the man sitting next to him. It must be a dream. Unfortunately, the pain when biting the lip made him conscious and realized that he was not in heaven because of the crash. “Who…Who A…Are…You?” He asked in a hoarse whisper. He was so weak and four words seemed to have drained all his energy. Cross-legged, Derek leaned against the chair and crossed his arms in front of his chest. The smile was all over his eyes. “It seems that you have forgotten everything,” Derek raised his eyebrows “I recognize who you are at the first sight, b~r~o~t~h~e~r.” He drawled deliberately and looked at John’s face to observe his reaction. Dumbfounded and unbelievable, John’s eyeballs extracted and slowly uttered, “D…Derek?” “Well~well. ” Derek nodded and clapped “it turns out you still remember me.” Derek never changed his name even being adopted by Bishop. It’s not because he still expects to be found by his mother, but just think it is worthless to change the name bestowed by his father for the filthy woman. John became excited and intended to get up, but he failed. His move even worsened his wounds and the pain got him. He could not slip a single word. “Easy, easy, brother” Derek was amused by his reaction “I’m not going to shed tears here. You are not my brother anymore.” His words provoked John once more and his face was as pale as a white paper. It took quite a while for him to get through the biting pain. Although John and Derek looked exactly the same, the sparkle in their eyes was completely different. Derek’s eyes are filled with malice and sagacity, while John’s eyes were more about earnestness and gentleness which might come from the fact that John was seriously wounded. John was well aware of Derek’s hostility and the reason behind it. He tried to lift his left hand to touch Derek but did not make it. He gasped and whispered, “we have been looking for you in the last twenty years.” “Oh? so the woman is still alive?” Derek was not surprised but he was not gonna tell how he was deserted in the wild like rubbish, and he knew John would defend that woman. At that time, John was just eight years old and probably had no idea of the entire story. He held no grudge against John. The only thing sticking in his throat was why the woman deserted him instead of John. "Of course." John was quite excited and started to look around"Where's my phone. I'll tell this to mom right away. She'll be happy..." Before John finished his words, Derek stopped him. "Your phone has been put away. I'll tell the 'GOOD' news to her in person." Derek smirked. "What do you mean by that?" "It means I'll be you for a couple of months and ask some questions to your mom. But don't worry, I'll do no harm to her. I just want to experience your life to figure something out." Derek put his right hand on John's shoulder. John was too stunned to utter a single word, watching Derek standing up and opening the door. "By the way, have you got married?"Derek turned back and asked. His hand was still on the doorknob. "If you do, I'll take charge of her as well and you are welcome."
