Chapter Ten
THE NEXT DAY, I WENT into the lab to collect my crew of non-detectives and head back to the fields. So much had happened that it was easy to forget we’d meant to question the agricultural workers, before being waylaid by the House of Anna and a magical tidal wave. But that lead was still dangling, and now we had more reason than ever to follow it.
Luca was already gone by the time I came in. One of the newer students went out to observe a few of the reptilian scitali that lived around Largo di Torre Argentina (which was practically next to the safety zone and almost as safe as being inside its bounds). He’d forgotten to bring a weapon just in case, started freaking out, and hid somewhere, refusing to move.
In case it wasn’t obvious, he wasn’t from around here.
