Chapter 5: The Unraveling

The next few days passed in a haze. Every time I walked down the hallway, I felt like I was watching shadows. Each stranger seemed a threat, each glance from Kelly was a coded message. And at night, I couldn’t sleep—I’d lie there, replaying her words about Ben, feeling the press of her fingers in my own, the memory of her kiss lingering on my mind like a ghost. Kelly stayed close to me, her usual spark dimmed but not extinguished. She clung to me as if I was her lifeline, and I found myself growing more protective of her. But as the weight of her secret grew, so did the sense that everything around us was shifting, spiraling toward something that neither of us could control. One afternoon, just as the final bell rang, Kelly caught up to me outside the school. Her eyes darted around, her jaw set with the same quiet fear that had haunted her face ever since that night. “Can we go somewhere?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “Somewhere…private.” I nodded, and we climbed into my car, driving in silence as the town fell away behind us. Eventually, we reached the lake on the outskirts of Ridgeway, the sky a dull gray above the still, glassy water. We got out, and I followed her down a narrow path that led to a secluded clearing along the shore. The air was chilly, heavy with the scent of pine and damp earth. She sat on a fallen log, pulling her jacket tightly around herself. For a moment, we just listened to the sound of the water lapping against the shore, the wind rustling through the trees. I could feel her tension, like a coiled spring ready to snap. “I have to tell you something,” she said finally, her voice breaking the silence. I waited, my heart pounding, knowing this was a truth I couldn’t ignore. “Whatever it is, you can trust me, Kelly.” She looked at me, her eyes filled with a mix of sadness and resolve. “Back in my old town, Ben wasn’t just some ex-boyfriend I could ignore. He…he was obsessed with me.” She took a shaky breath. “At first, it was just sweet things. Notes, little surprises. But then he started showing up everywhere. He’d be outside my window at night, follow me to my friends’ houses. When I tried to break it off, he lost it.” I clenched my fists, anger simmering beneath my skin. “Did anyone help you?” She shook her head, her gaze dropping to the ground. “No one believed me. Not until the night he showed up at my house, pounding on the door, yelling for me to come outside.” She closed her eyes, her hands trembling. “He wouldn’t leave, so I called the police. They came and took him away, but even that didn’t stop him. He showed up again a week later, and that’s when my parents finally agreed to let me leave and stay with my aunt here.” I wanted to reach out, to hold her, but I stayed still, letting her speak. She looked so fragile, so raw, her walls crumbling as she shared the memories she’d tried so hard to bury. “When I saw his car at the drive-in, I realized he’d found me.” Her voice was barely a whisper, each word a weight. “I don’t know how, but I know he won’t stop until he gets what he wants.” Her words hung in the air, filling the silence with a darkness that seemed to seep into everything around us. My mind raced, torn between fear and the instinct to protect her at any cost. I couldn’t imagine what she’d been through, but I knew one thing for certain: I wouldn’t let Ben hurt her again. "Kelly,” I said, my voice firm, “we’re going to figure this out. We’ll go to the police, we’ll tell someone who can help.” She shook her head, panic flashing in her eyes. “No. You don’t understand, he’s smart. He’s always one step ahead, always knows exactly where I’ll be. I can’t go through it all again. I can’t drag you into this.” “Hey,” I said, my voice softer this time. I reached out, taking her hand in mine. “I’m already in this. Whatever it takes, we’ll face it together.” She looked up at me, tears glistening in her eyes, and in that moment, I knew that she’d been carrying this weight alone for far too long. She squeezed my hand, a silent acknowledgment, a wordless thank you. But as we sat there, the sound of tires crunching on gravel reached us from the parking lot above. Kelly stiffened, her eyes wide with terror. “Is that…?” I pulled her behind a nearby tree, peering around to catch a glimpse of the car through the thick branches. It was black, the windows tinted, the driver’s side door slowly opening. I felt a cold dread settle over me as a figure stepped out, tall and imposing, his face obscured by a baseball cap. “Come on,” I whispered, pullin Kelly deeper into the trees. We kept low, moving as quietly as possible, weaving our way through the underbrush. I could feel her hand shaking in mine, her breathing shallow and quick. I wanted to tell her it would be okay, that we’d escape, but I didn’t know if it was true. We kept moving, ducking behind trees, making our way toward the other side of the lake where I knew there was another trail that led back to the road. But the sound of footsteps grew closer, echoing through the trees, every crunch of leaves and snap of twigs making my heart race faster. Finally, we broke through the trees, the road just a few yards ahead. I could see a couple of cars in the distance, a faint glimmer of hope. “Run,” I whispered to her, and we sprinted across the clearing, my mind focused only on getting her out of there. But just as we reached the edge of the road, a hand grabbed my shoulder, yanking me backward. I stumbled, turning to face Ben, his face twisted in anger, his eyes blazing with a fury that sent a chill down my spine. “You thought you could run from me, Kelly?” he sneered, his voice low and menacing. “Did you really think I’d let you go?” Kelly backed up, terror flashing across her face. “Ben, please…just leave us alone.” But he only laughed, a harsh, grating sound that echoed through the clearing. “Leave you alone? Oh, Kelly, we’re just getting started.” Without thinking, I stepped between them, my hands clenched into fists. “You need to back off, Ben.
