Astrid POV.
I woke up to the annoying sound of my alarm going off. I groaned as I rolled over to turn it off “Shut up you stupid thing!” I said as I struggled to find my phone with my eyes still closed. It took me a minute, but I finally found my phone and hit the button. Sighing, I rolled out of bed just as my door opened. “Morning, Astrid.” My dad said as he walked in holding a tray full of my favourite breakfast foods. “Happy birthday!” I smiled at him standing up taking the tray and setting on my bed. “Good morning to you too. This smells amazing!” Gesturing to the tray. “I am happy I start my last year of high school today. I can’t wait to leave this place and go to Ottawa, Canada to make a fresh start. I grew up in a small town just out side of Winnipeg, Saskatchewan. The Murder Capital in Canada. So many deaths are reported in my small town alone. Doesn’t help that there has been a wild wolf hiding in the forest for the last 18 years. It kills anyone it comes in contact with. Only one person has seen it and lived. But that person apparently died 5 years ago to an unknown cause.
“The sooner I graduate and turn 18, the better.” I said to my dad who looks saddened by my statement. “You’d better visit me then if you plan on leaving me behind!” My dad joked knowing full well I was planning on him coming with me. “You know full well why it’s dangerous to keep living here.” I said back in a more serious tone. “I know. I just love you too much to let you go.” Dad said looking out the window as if he sees something. I turn to look where he is looking but I don’t see anything. “Anyways, I need to get ready for school. Can I take the truck?” I asked excitedly. I loved driving the truck every chance I got. I don’t get too very often cause my dad says it’s bad on gas. Especially with it being 1.60 per Letre right now. ‘Why is Trudeau running Canada into the dirt?’ I questioned my self. Dad smiled at my excitement. “Yes. The truck is yours for the year.” Dad said smiling waiting for my response. “The whole year!?” I jumped as I wasn’t expecting him to say that. “It’s your senior year. You’ll want to go out with your friends more, maybe get a job, or travel a bit. It’ll be easier if I just let you use the truck all the time. Plus it’s armoured so if you get attacked by the beast at any point, you will be better protected.” He further explained. “Your the best!” I exclaimed giving him a hug. “Now eat up and get ready to go or you’ll be late!” He said backing out of my room and closing the door.
I ate quickly and got dressed. I went with a simple t-shirt and ripped jeans. I tossed my long dark brown hair into a messy bun before grabbing my bag and going down stairs. “Bye dad!” I called out. “Have a good first day!” He called back from the kitchen now dressed in his work uniform.
“Hey girl!” I called rolling down the window as my best friend makes her way to the truck from her house. “Happy birthday!!” She screamed at me climbing in. “Got ya a little something.” She said winking at me. “No you didn’t.” I retorted. “You know I don’t like getting gifts!” “Just this once. I know you’ll love it. Please accept?” Bella pouted. “Fine.” I sighed. “Yes! Now close your eyes!” “What?” I asks confused. “Just do it!” She commanded crossing her arms.” “Ok?” I said doing as it told. I felt her hands clap something behind my neck then felt a light weight drop onto my chest. “And… open!” She said excitedly. I looked down to see a beautiful silver necklace with a small full moon pendant on the thin chain. “I love it!” I looked at her. “I knew you would!” She replied. I completely forgot what time it was when I glanced over. “Crap! We’re gonna be late!” I said in a frantic voice. I started the truck up again and we’re on our way.
We got to school just as the final warning bell rung. After parking, we jumped out and ran towards our classes. “I’ll see you at lunch!” Bella called as she went the opposite way down the hall from me before disappearing around the corner. Just as I was about to enter my class, I was suddenly stopped by a strong smell. Almost like minty chocolate. I quickly glanced around but all I saw was a guy, who looked new to the school, walking towards me before going into the class across the hall. ‘Hmm. Ok then?’ I thought to myself shrugging it off not wanting to be any more late than I already was.
As soon as I entered the room I saw something, or rather someone I never could think would be real. “Who are you!?” I questioned pointing at a guy a littler taller than me but looked identical to me. “Uhhh, who are you?” He questioned back. He has the same dark burgundy brown hair as me, same grey eyes and even the same birth mark on his upper forearm. He looks like the male version of me. Just then, the teacher walked in. “Ok ok settle down class. What’s all the… oh my. Looks like we’ve got a mix match here.” Mrs. Elliot joked. An older woman with a sense of humour. “Just sit down and we will handle this later.” She instructed and class began. I couldn’t help but keep glancing away from the board looking at my doppelgänger. He kept glancing at me too. It was clear he didn’t have a clue who I was. I was determined to get to the bottom of this.
