Episode 2: The Strange Book and the Unseen Stranger

878 Words
The old library stood apart from the busy city noise — quiet, dimly lit, and filled with the scent of aged paper and wood. It was the only place where Park Soo-jin could let go of her role as CEO, set aside the weight of her family’s expectations, and just breathe. She walked slowly between the tall shelves, her heels making soft clicks on the wooden floor. Her mind was still busy — reports, meetings, her stepfamily’s hidden schemes, and her grandmother’s constant talk of marriage. She needed something to clear her thoughts. As she turned a corner, something caught her eye. High up on the very top shelf, pushed far back and away from all the other books, rested a thick volume bound in plain black leather. It had no title, no author’s name, and no decorations — just a dark cover that seemed to soak in the light around it. “How long has this been here?” Soo-jin murmured. She didn’t remember seeing it before. She dragged a small rolling ladder over, climbed up carefully, and stretched out her hand. Her fingers were just inches from touching the cover — when a cold, sharp voice echoed right behind her. “Do not touch that book.” Soo-jin froze. She turned quickly, ready to tell someone off for startling her — and her breath caught. Standing there was a tall, handsome young man with sharp dark eyes, pale skin, and jet-black hair. He wore simple dark clothing, and wrapped around his right forearm was a swirling black tattoo that glowed faintly with its own strange light. But what surprised her most was that — no one else in the library seemed to notice him at all. People walked past where he stood, looked straight through him, and continued on their way as if he were just empty air. Soo-jin raised an eyebrow, her CEO attitude showing instantly. “Excuse me? This is a public library. Why can’t I touch it? And who exactly are you anyway?” The man — Han Joon-woo — looked at her with no expression. For centuries, only those who wanted to make a wish could see him. This woman did not look desperate, did not call for power, and did not speak of any impossible desire. Yet here she was, looking directly at him, hearing him, and speaking to him as if he were an ordinary person. “You can see me?” he asked, his voice low and confused. “Of course I can see you,” Soo-jin replied, crossing her arms. “Are you playing some kind of game? Everyone else here is acting like you don’t even exist.” Joon-woo’s eyes narrowed. This was not supposed to happen. But he did not let his confusion show. He reached past her, took the black book from the shelf, and held it firmly against his chest. “This belongs to my world,” he said coldly. “Humans have no business opening it.” “Your world?” Soo-jin laughed softly, not believing him. “And what world is that, may I ask?” He looked straight into her eyes and said clearly, “I am a demon.” For a moment, there was silence. Then Soo-jin burst into light laughter. “A demon? Really? That’s the best line you could think of? I’ve heard better stories from my business partners. You’re strange — but not scary.” She thought he was just a weird, mysterious man who liked dramatic words. She had no idea that to every other person in this room, he was completely invisible. Before she could ask more questions or demand the book back, Joon-woo stepped back. A thin wisp of black mist curled around his feet. In the blink of an eye, he vanished — just like that — leaving no trace behind. Soo-jin stared at the empty spot, her laughter fading. She rubbed her eyes, looked around, and even walked forward to touch the air where he had stood. “Gone… just like that?” she whispered, her heart beating a little faster. “Was I imagining things? Or did that really happen?” No matter how much she thought about it, she could not shake off the feeling. The coldness in his voice, the glowing tattoo, and the way he had disappeared so easily — it felt too real to be a dream. She climbed back down the ladder, still looking up at the empty shelf. “A demon… what a ridiculous thing to say. But whoever he is, I have a feeling this isn’t the last time I’ll see him.” Meanwhile, somewhere in the shadows between realms, Han Joon-woo stood holding the black book, his expression unreadable. “She saw me… she heard me… and she does not seek any wish,” he thought. “This has never happened before. Why her?” He ran his fingers over the glowing tattoo on his arm. The rules of his world were clear — invisible, grant wishes, take life force, be forgotten. But Park Soo-jin had broken those rules just by looking at him. And neither of them knew yet — that brief meeting was only the first thread tying their fates together.
