CHAPTER 29 Frost made a snatch for Maddie as she rocketed out of Steadman’s grasp, his heart beating in his throat as if it had wings and was trying to escape. He’d seen the man materialize out of the shadows, the outline of the shotgun silhouetted in darker shades against the gloom. During the shooting, he hadn’t been able to get a good glimpse of Dart Rosedale and he couldn’t be sure that’s who faced them now, but he felt the situation called for extreme caution. Maddie’s exuberance overcame both his and Steadman’s efforts to restrain her, and Frost watched in dread as the girl sped into the night, closing the distance. As she leapt into the man’s arms, a baying of dogs burst into the night and two enormous mastiffs loped into view, pausing to sniff and lick at Maddie before moving on
