CHAPTER 27 Dart hunkered down behind a clump of hydrangeas in Maddie’s front yard, watching the windows of the house, the smell of damp earth crinkling his nostrils. Dusk was just settling over the landscape and the sky was an ashy gray, no stars peeping through to break up the sullen blanket. Dart licked a finger and lifted it to the sky. Not much in the way of a breeze, but he detected a feeble eastward puff. If that changed, fallout from the volcano could shift in their direction, dumping loads of ash into the air. Best to be under cover in those circumstances. The lawmen had been paddling, he noticed, rather than running the motor. With all the muck in the water, he wasn’t surprised. He was about ninety percent sure he’d beaten them here and nothing he observed said any different. He
