MILES “How could you?!” My mom sent me to the floor with a hard slap that reverberated in my head. My eyes widened in shock as I stumbled off balance. “How dare you bring such disgrace and disrepute to our name? How could you disgrace us like this?” “I wasn’t the one who cheated.” I struggled to get up. “It was her. She was the one who cheated. That..that was a mistake. I didn’t mean for it to happen, I just….” “All your mother and I had done … was to give you the best life. A life that was just a dream for many. You were supposed to do just one thing, get married but what did you do? You failed at if just like every other thing you have done. Have you seen the news? Have you seen the headlines? My name is being dragged in the mud because of you! The videos are everywhere on social media. You insulted me right in front of the guests!” Father threw his hands. This…. This was not what I expected. Isadora had set Marissa up so I could end things with her but what I didn’t understand was how the video had been replaced with what I saw. Who could have done it? “She just released a video. “My kid sister, Raven spoke as she walked towards us with her tablet. It had been a few hours since we returned home yet Father and Mother would not stop yelling at me like a little child. I on the other hand, was still confused about how everything played out. Raven played the video and I furrowed my brows. “I want to start by saying ..thank you to everyone who reached out, who stood by me. You all deserve to know the truth. The truth I’ve been protecting for too long. We were already over.” Marissa started and Mother looked at me before looking back at the video. “We broke up about a month and few weeks ago. But unfortunately, the wedding date has been picked and invite has been sent out. Everyone was ecstatic for this big day and I didn’t want to ruin the moment. I discovered he cheated on me repeatedly but the last straw was finding out he was sleeping with someone close to me, my step-sister. But I wanted to protect his image. For the sake of our families. For the people who loved us together so I agreed to go through with the wedding publicly. We were going to end it quietly, respectfully. I was however oblivious to the fact that he had another plan. A plan to humiliate me publicly on what was supposed to be our day. He wanted to show the video of me in bed with another man. A fabricated one as a desperate attempt to flip the narrative but karma had other plans so instead of his little masterpiece, the truth played itself. You can’t script justice better than that. Yes, I ran. Not because I was guilty but because I was heartbroken and tired. Tired of pretending. Tired of loving someone who loved only himself but now, I am done protecting a man who tried to destroy me and to be clear, I am in love. I am in love with someone who sees me. Someone who values me. Someone who didn’t need a wedding or a show to prove it. To every woman who’s been humiliated, betrayed and still held her head up, this is for you. And to him, enjoy the spotlight. You wanted a show. Congratulations; you are the villain in your own story…” There was a deep silence from everyone and I knew it simply meant danger. “You humiliated yourself.” Father spoke quietly. “And me. And this family. And the entire goddamn company.” I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t have the time to prepare anything in my head. “Yoi think you can make some sick drama out of a woman you claimed to love?” “it wasn’t supposed to go like that.” I muttered. “Oh?” He let out a dry laugh. “You mean the part where you got exposed instead? The part where your mother had to sit there and watch the world realize her son is a loser and a disgrace?” He suddenly went quiet. “You are out” My heart skipped. “Out?” “Of the company. Of the board. Out of every seat you didn’t earn but I gave you because I thought you could be more than my shadow.” “Dad….” “No.” He snapped. “Not this time. You don’t get to fail and fall back on my name. Not when my clients are calling, threatening to pull out. Definitely not when we’re on the news for all the wrong reasons.” “It was just one mistake!” I stood up. “Until you go to that woman, apologize to her face and fix this mess, you are nothing in my company. You are nothing in my house!” My mother and Raven walked right after him, living me all alone in the living room. Shoot! Who dared played this trick on me? I had to speak to Isadora. She had planned this. Every detail, every move, every shot of Marissa’s video. She said it would free us both! She told me she was tired of hiding and wanted me all to herself. I dialed her number immediately and on the third ring, she picked. “How did your plan fail? You promised everything would go right. What happened? This was supposed to make us happy and allow us be free to be with each other but now, my father has withdrawn everything from me. He has removed me from the board and from every position in his company. As it stands, I have nothing! What are we going to do?” I questioned. “Don’t you ever call this line again!” I froze. “Dora…..” “You manipulated me! You made me do things I never wanted to do. You ruined my name. Everyone now thinks I am a monster!” She spoke, sobbing. My mouth hung open. What…. What the heck was happening? “You animal! I hope you rot in hell! You have destroyed my daughter’s life with your stupid madness! Don’t ever call her in your miserable life!” Her mother yelled. Before I got the chance to say another word, she ended the call. I sat down, cold and stunned. The phone dropped from my hand and clattered to the marble floor. She sold me out. Isadora sold me out. The girl who whispered in my ear that she'd burn the world for me…. She had just handed me the match and poured the fuel straight over my head. And now…. I was the only one standing in the fire.
