Chapter Eleven:Board meetings

1106 Words
Breakfast was served exactly at seven. Ethan was already seated at the dining table with a cup of black coffee beside him as he quietly read the morning newspaper. The soft clink of porcelain echoed through the penthouse as Nora descended the staircase. "Morning," she greeted with a smile, pouring herself a cup of coffee before taking the seat across from him. Ethan looked up from the paper and offered a small nod. "Morning." For a few moments, silence settled comfortably between them. "I have a staff meeting at nine," Nora said, stirring her coffee. Ethan folded the newspaper and placed it neatly on the table. "My board called an emergency meeting for eleven." She looked up. "About... what?"she asked "About the optics," he said calmly. "They want to meet the woman who got married to me." Nora paused, her coffee cup halfway to her lips before lowering it again. A faint smile touched her face. "Then they'll meet her." Carter Heights — 9:00 A.M. The conference room buzzed with quiet conversation as department heads waited for the meeting to begin. Twenty executives. Victor sat near the far end of the table, flipping through a stack of reports. At exactly 8:59, the glass doors opened. Nora walked in wearing a brown blazer, her posture straight and her expression composed. Every conversation stopped. She placed her tablet on the table and looked around the room. "Good morning, everyone." Her voice was calm but carried naturally across the room. "Let's begin." The meeting progressed smoothly through financial reports, quarterly budgets, and the rehiring process. Then Victor cleared his throat. "Ms. Carter..." She looked toward him. "The management team has some concerns. Considering the recent auction... and your marriage... can Carter Heights truly continue operating independently?" The room became still. Nora slowly placed her pen on the table and looked straight at him. "Victor," she said evenly, "I'll address this only once." No one moved. "First, our debt has been cleared. Carter Heights is financially stable. That matter is no longer open for discussion." She paused briefly before continuing. "Second, my marriage is private. It will never be a topic of discussion inside this company again." Another pause. "And finally..." Her eyes swept across every face around the table. "This company carries my family's name." "It will continue under my leadership." "If you have concerns about our performance, bring me numbers." "If your concerns are about me..." She offered a calm, closed-lip smile. "...then you're sitting in the wrong meeting." Silence. Absolute silence. The conference room doors opened. Ethan stood outside. His eyes immediately found Nora standing at the head of the room. He noticed Victor. Read the atmosphere instantly. Without interrupting, he quietly closed the door again and remained outside. Inside, Nora never acknowledged the interruption. She simply turned another page. "Now," she said smoothly, "let's discuss our third-quarter marketing projections." The meeting continued without another question. When it finally ended, employees gathered their files and quietly filed out. "Thank you, Ms. Carter." "Excellent presentation." Victor remained behind. "Ms. Carter... I didn't mean to imply—" She stopped him with a polite nod. "Noted." Her expression remained unreadable. "You're on probation." Without another word, she walked out. Ethan was waiting beside the elevator. "Ready?" he asked. "Yes." A small smile appeared on her face. "Let's go." Blackwood Group — 11:00 A.M. The atmosphere inside the Blackwood boardroom was entirely different. Twelve directors sat around the polished oak table. Powerful men. Experienced business people. Conversation stopped the instant Ethan entered. Nora walked in beside him. Every pair of eyes shifted toward her. "Gentlemen," Ethan said. "This is Nora Carter." He glanced at her. "CEO of Carter Heights." A brief pause,"And my wife." Soft whispers spread around the room. Mr. Davies, the oldest member of the board, adjusted his glasses before speaking. "Mrs. Blackwood." His tone remained polite. "This marriage..." He folded his hands together. "It was convenient, wasn't it? Mainly to settle your debt?" Nora never flinched. She calmly took the chair. Ethan pulled out for her before meeting Mr. Davies' gaze. "Mr. Davies." Her voice was calm. "Allow me to answer directly." "Yes." "The marriage prevented Carter Heights from being auctioned." "But no..." "It wasn't convenient." "It was necessary." She looked around the room. "The better question isn't why I married Ethan Blackwood." "It's whether Carter Heights is now a stable business partner for Blackwood Group." She slid several neatly organized folders across the table and the answer is yes. Inside were financial forecasts, new client acquisitions, and quarterly projections. "We've returned to profitability." She smiled politely. "With or without the Blackwood name." Another director leaned forward. "And if this contract ends in twelve months?" Again, that same composed smile. "Then Carter Heights still remains standing." Her eyes never left his. "Because it's mine." Silence settled across the room. Ethan watched her throughout the exchange. He never interrupted, he never intended to. Finally, Mr. Davies nodded slowly. "Well..." A faint smile crossed his face. "That's perfectly clear." The meeting concluded less than ten minutes later. Inside the elevator, Ethan finally broke the silence. "You didn't need me to speak for you." Nora looked at him. "No." Her smile softened. "But thank you for letting me speak for myself." For the first time that day, Ethan smiled. "You really are polite." She laughed quietly. "I am professional." She met his eyes. "There's a difference." That evening, Nora arrived home just before eight. She slipped off her heels and entered the living room. Ethan was sitting on the sofa with his laptop balanced on one knee. Without looking up, he gestured toward the dining table. "Margaret left dinner for you." Nora smiled warmly. "Thank you, Ethan, I appreciate it." She ate quietly while he continued working. The comfortable silence between them no longer felt awkward. It felt... natural. At exactly ten o'clock, she closed her laptop and stood. Stopping outside his study, she knocked lightly on the open door. "Goodnight." A small smile curved her lips. "Goodnight, Nora." She disappeared down the hallway. Ethan stared after her for several seconds before returning to his screen. Only... He wasn't reading anymore. She had walked into two boardrooms that day, faced two groups determined to question her and walked out of both with her dignity—and authority—completely intact. For the first time since signing the contract, Ethan found himself wondering if the paper between them was still the strongest thing holding them together. Or if, somewhere between polite smiles and quiet respect... Something else had quietly begun, he smiled for the first time in years. A happy smile
