Luelle POV
“Where have you two been? Mr. Peterson have been waiting!” Marcus, one of the guys on the team asked as we stepped in through the elevators. I frowned and placed my water bottle on my desk.
“Why? We dont have anything to do for him until the meeting tomorrow.” I replied turning to Lily who just shrugged.
“Well, he seems all over the place since his visitor walked in-”
“What visitor?”
“Miss Lain!” I jerked up at the sound of my name being called and everyone stared at me. “Mr. Peterson needs you in his office now!” I rushed by rubbing my sweaty palm to the side of my black pencil skirt. As i brushed a loose strand of hair behind my ears, i pushed open the door.
“Yes Mr. Peter-” My words remain stuck in my throat and my brows narrowed. What the hell was he doing here?
“Are you going to keep mute like an i***t or are you going to acknowledge Mr. Reed.” He snapped and i swallowed bowing slowly with a stressed smile on my face,
“This is Miss Lain, she’s one of our staff. She used to be good at her job but now she’s slacking even more.” Mr peterson stated with a nervous chuckle but Kai remained quiet. Why was he here?
“Miss Lain? Was it?”
“Uh- ye- yes.” I stammered, a couple of minutes ago i was bold on talking back to him but right now, i felt like i was stuck in a quick sand.
“Stop acting like an imbecile and speak up would you-” Mr. peterson snapped and i jumped, why was i feeling nervous all of a sudden and why did my head feel heavy. “I’m sorry for her behaviour- staffs right-”
“Thats enough.” Kai said and his voice was low and firm. Mr. Peterson kept quiet and the entire room fell silent. “Can i see what i came here for?” He asked plainly and for the first time, i peaked up to see his face. His brows were not creased as i had seen back at the cafe, neither was his jaw in a tight fit but my eyes moved down to his hands which were clutched over the arm rest.
“Here they are-” Mr. Peterson passed them unto Kai who stared and flipped through the pages.
“Who made this?” He asked without looking up.
“Its Luella’s job.” He said as though he didnt want to bear the criticizim of the errors.
“Then excuse us while i speak to her alone.” Mr. Peterson eyes widened but he didnt need to be told twice before he left.
“Sit.” He commanded gently closing the papers and turning to me. The only available chair was next to him and with one glance at him, i could tell he wasn’t messing around. I pulled the chair and sat with my legs pressed together and my hands on my knees.
“You made this?” He asked waving the file and i nodded. “You weren’t this quiet back at the cafe or at the resturant.”
“I’m sorry-” I apologized knowing if i messed up, Mr. Peterson wouldn’t let me go scott free.
“For what? Being yourself or being yelled upon by a man who is clearly blind.” his words had me sttaring up at him.
What?
“Sorry?”
“Look Luelle, what you did here is phenomenal and on normal occassion i wouldnt step feet into this dump but i just had to see the person who worked on this and i’m very much impressed at your work but also surprised that you’re letting an i***t like James walk over you.” Kai said casually like he care who Mr. Peterson was.
“I- he’s my boss, i have to do as he’s asked.”
“An i***t one who doesnt know how to foster great talent.” Did he hit his head or something? Kai wasn’t the type who passed compliments, especially with how he had taken me to be in his head.
“And you do?”
“Or trust me love, i do.” He did it again.
“Can you stop calling me that?” I finally let out and he stared at me, his eyes studying me like a project to be worked on.
“Why?”
“Because i’m not your love and it sounds weird coming from a stranger-”
“Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Isn’t that what you wanted?”
“Ye-”
“Leave this place El, you have great talent and a potential that should be explored in the right place.” He said like he didnt care if this place provided me with what i needed to live.
“I can’t, unlike some of us, we have to work to get what we want.” I didnt hide the anger in my voice.
“You’re claiming that i don’t work hard for what i want, is that it El?” he asked but before i could reply he leaned in and i moved back in my seat. “I’m in the tenth floor of a building that is poorly managed and terrible air conditioner looking for a woman who could be of great use to me, when i can just stay in my office and do things my way, don’t you think this also counts as hard work?”
Silence.
“Of course not, you don’t because all you’ve known how to do is struggle and take things when you shouldnt.” His words pierced me hard but i remained quiet.
“You know nothing about me, so don’t pretend like you do.” I muttered and he scoffed and rose to his feet, he was tall and with hs frame towering over me, i could only stare up at him.
“Oh trust me El, i do. You have twenty fours hours to leave this job,” he said as he walked towarsd the door.
He was joking right?
“And what makes you think i’ll do as you ask?” I stared after him as his hands hovered over the knob.
“Lets just say that you don’t like to be in debt.” He said with a smile and pulled the door opened. “Oh and El? Send my regards to your mum, i’m looking foward to meeting her soon.”
