Kai POV
When Kain asked me to accompany him to drop a message off, I didn't think we would end up in a cheap restaurant where loud people would huddle together, nor did I expect anyone to run into me and pour cheap ass drink over my twenty-two hundred dollar shirt. Now I had to wait for him while he finished up with the girl in front of us. She was chatty, just like Kain, it was not a surprise that the two of them were related.
“So who are you here with? I can see a bag, is she cute- someone who may want to come home with me?”
“Behave Kain, she’s off limits.” His cousin warned. As though I was living my own series of unfortunate events, the chatty girl in front of us waved someone over.
“Hey Luelle, come say hi to my cousin and his friend.” All that mattered to me was leaving this place as soon as I could and with my phone in hand I scrolled through until the footsteps coming closer stopped.
“What happened? You look like something happened?” Kain’s cousin asked her friend, who hadn’t uttered a single word.
“What the hell happened to your shirt man?” Kain whispered and I rubbed my chin.
“Some chick bumped into me-”
“Hello.” The small voice that I had heard a couple of minutes ago was back and this time she was much closer to me. I followed her silhouette and when she took the chair directly opposite me, I was forced to stare at her face. With her head down the entire time, it was difficult to see her face but now that she was much closer-
“Kai?” Kain called but my gaze still remained on the woman in front of me.
“Hmm?”
“You’re staring.”
“I know.” I replied and my eyes followed the bopping of her throat.
“You two know each other?” Kain’s cousin asked her friend who was also staring back at me.
“What? No.” We answered simultaneously. “Yes.”
Kain stared at me and then the lady, Luelle, was it?
“Okay? Now that’s weird-”
“Its funny to say that you don’t know me after spilling your drink on my shirt.” I snarled hoping to intimidate her which I did as her palm seated on her thighs folded.
“It was a mistake, I didn't mean to.”
“Well sorry, isn't going to fix my twenty two hundred dollar shirt now is it?”
“Luelle,”
“It was a goddamn mistake okay?!” she bursted out, surprising everyone. She was breathing heavily and her eyes were murky, like she wanted to cry.
“It was a mistake and I'm sorry that i can’t pa- pay you or do anything-” she was trying so hard to control her tone. She was clearly upset by something and it wasn’t because of me.
“Luelle–” but the woman in front of me had already carried her bag and walked out of the restaurant.
“Geez, what is wrong with her?” Kain snorted and his cousin glared at him and then at me.
“What? I didn't do anything. He was the one who-”
“It doesn't matter, okay, she was already having a bad enough day with her mum and wo-” she stopped and sighed. “Look, thank you for coming to see me but my friend needs me, goodbye kain and next time bring your nice friends.”
Ouch.
I watched as she hurried outside and through the large glass windows I noticed the distress on Luelle. It was something I was very familiar with, something that I never thought would happen to someone like me.
“Who is she?” I asked with my gaze still focused on the outside.
“Who? Gabrielle’s friend? I have no idea but she’s always bringing her up- they’re quite close too. Why?”
“Nothing-” the lie rolled off my tongue and as my head calculated the next thing. My phone rang, bringing me out of my zone and i turned to the screen. It was my mother.
“Let's go.”
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
I stared at the bed, at the man with tubes and machines all over. It had been a while since i stepped in due to a lot of reasons but now i was back, meaning i would get to visit more often.
“Mr. Reed, I didn't know you were coming in today.” Doctor Gary greeted with a warm smile as he stepped inside his room.
“Neither did I, but I guess the wind always takes us to places.” I replied. “How is he?”
“Walk with me.” We stepped out into the hallway and as he told me about his condition, my eyes wandered to the people who were around the lounge, they were just a few of them but then one of them particularly caught my eye.
“How long is it going to take?” I had stopped walking to make sure it was the same person I had in mind.
“Uhm- a week, or more, depends on how much his body responds.” He replied and then followed my line of vision. “Oh- she’s back.” He muttered.
“You know her?” I asked, turning to him as the lady chatted with one of the nurses.
“Oh yes, a sweet lady's bad life isn't the best for her right now.” He replied. “Her mother is currently a patient in this hospital and in need of a surgery but from the silence i got from her three days ago, its clear that she doesn’t have the money to help her mother.
So she is a damsel in distress.
“I see,” I muttered and at the same time her eyes skimmed over the room until they locked on mine, her lips which were in a thin line spread into a small smile- was she smiling at me?
“Oh, she’s seen us.” Doctor Gary replied and waved at her. Of course, she was smiling at the doctor instead of me, she hated me for making her cry over my shirt.
“Let's go.” I said to Doctor Gary and with one last look at Luelle I walked away, and even as I disappeared down the hall, I could still feel her eyes on me.
