Collision

Lena could feel the tension the moment Vanessa walked away. It was not something she could explain easily. Nothing dramatic had happened. No accusations were made. No argument took place. Yet something about that brief conversation had changed the atmosphere between her and Adrian. She looked at him carefully. "Adrian." He turned toward her. "Yes?" "Who is she?" For a moment, he said nothing. And that silence told Lena more than any answer could have. She had always believed that silence carried its own meaning. "Someone from my past," he finally said. Lena studied his face. "That sounds like there is more to the story." "There is." The honesty in his voice surprised her. But it also made her more curious. She looked around the room filled with people celebrating her success. A moment she should have been enjoying. A moment she had dreamed about for years. Yet now, part of her mind was somewhere else. With Adrian. With the things he was not saying. "I don't want to ruin tonight," Adrian said quietly. Lena looked at him. "You are not ruining anything." "But?" She sighed. "But I don't like feeling like there are parts of you I don't know." The words affected him because he knew she was right. He had spent so much time wanting Lena to understand him, but he had been afraid to let her see everything. "I will explain," he promised. Lena held his gaze. "When?" Adrian swallowed. "Soon." She nodded slowly. But deep down, she wondered how many times people said soon when they really meant not yet. ... The drive home was quieter than usual. Adrian wanted to say something. Anything. But every explanation felt incomplete. How could he tell Lena about the man he used to be without making excuses? How could he explain years of bad decisions without hurting her? When they arrived at her apartment, Lena reached for the door handle. Before she stepped out, she looked back at him. "I don't need you to be perfect, Adrian." He looked at her. "I know you have a past. Everyone does." Her voice softened. "But I need honesty." Those words followed him long after she walked inside. ... The next morning, Adrian received a call from Vanessa. He almost ignored it. Almost. But he knew avoiding her would not solve anything. "What do you want?" Vanessa laughed softly. "You still talk to me like I am your enemy." "You came to my event without warning." "I wanted to see the woman who changed you." Adrian's expression hardened. "This is not a game." "No, Adrian. It isn't." Her voice became serious. "You think you can become a different man and pretend the old one never existed." "I don't pretend." "Really?" A pause followed. "Does Lena know everything?" Adrian said nothing. Vanessa continued. "Does she know about the women before her?" His jaw tightened. "Stop." "Does she know about the lifestyle you had?" "Vanessa." "Does she know that you were never the kind of man who believed in commitment?" The words hurt because they came from someone who knew the truth. Adrian ended the call. For several minutes, he sat in silence. He hated that Vanessa could still make him feel like the person he used to be. But maybe that was because a part of him still carried shame. ... Meanwhile, Lena returned to her studio and tried to focus on work. She had deadlines. Clients waiting. A business that needed her attention. But her mind kept returning to Adrian. Not because she thought he had done something wrong. Because she knew there was something he was struggling to tell her. Maya noticed immediately. "You are distracted." Lena looked up. "Am I that obvious?" "To me, yes." Lena smiled faintly. "There is something about Adrian's past that he hasn't told me." Maya became quiet. "Do you think it is bad?" Lena looked down. "I don't know." "Are you afraid?" She thought about it. "Yes." Maya sat beside her. "Because of what he did?" "No." Lena looked at the designs in front of her. "Because I know what it feels like to build trust with someone and then discover you never knew the full story." Maya understood. Everyone had wounds. Some were visible. Others were hidden beneath years of pretending to be fine. ... That evening, Adrian made a decision. He could not keep waiting. He could not continue asking Lena to trust him while hiding the things that could change how she saw him. He went to her apartment. When she opened the door, she immediately knew something was different. "You look serious." Adrian took a breath. "I need to tell you something." Lena stepped aside and allowed him in. They sat across from each other in silence. For the first time, Adrian was not thinking about protecting his image. He was not thinking about losing control. He was thinking about being honest. "I was not always the man you know." Lena remained quiet. "I made mistakes." He looked down. "Many mistakes." She listened carefully. "And before you, my life was different." The room became heavier. Lena's heart started beating faster. Because she knew this was not a small confession. This was something that could change everything. Adrian looked at her. "I need you to know the truth about me." And for the first time in years, Adrian Hayes was ready to face the consequences of who he had been.
