Truth

940 Words
Lena had always believed that the hardest battles were the ones people could see. Building her fashion brand had been difficult. Raising Ethan alone had been difficult. Starting over when life forced her to had been difficult. But lately, she had discovered that a different kind of challenge existed. Allowing herself to be happy. For years, she had been so focused on surviving that she forgot what it felt like to simply enjoy a moment. She was used to being responsible, careful, and prepared for disappointment. Adrian made her feel something she had not expected. Peace. And that scared her more than she wanted to admit. One afternoon, Lena sat in her studio reviewing the latest updates from her team. Her collection was receiving more attention than ever before, and several important clients had shown interest. It was everything she had worked for. Yet instead of celebrating, she found herself thinking about the person she wanted to share the news with first. Adrian. She smiled at the thought before quickly shaking her head. “You’re getting too comfortable,” she whispered to herself. She knew how easy it was to become attached to someone who made life feel lighter. But she also knew that people could change. Promises could fail. Love could hurt. Her past had taught her that. ... Adrian had been quieter than usual. Lena noticed it the moment he arrived at her studio that evening. “You’re thinking about something,” she said. Adrian looked at her and smiled slightly. “You always know.” “I told you, I pay attention.” He looked around the studio. “You know, I think that is one of the things I admire about you.” Lena raised an eyebrow. “What?” “You notice things other people ignore.” She smiled. “Is that a compliment?” “It is.” For a moment, Adrian simply watched her. He had spent years surrounded by people who wanted something from him. People who cared about his name, his influence, and his success. Lena was different. She cared about the person behind all of that. And that made hiding the truth harder. “Lena,” he said quietly. She looked at him. “Yes?” There was a pause. A moment where he could have told her everything. About Claire. About his marriage. About the mistakes that still followed him. But the words refused to come. Instead, he said, “Have you ever been afraid that telling someone the truth could change the way they see you?” The question surprised her. Lena thought about it carefully. “Yes.” Adrian looked at her. “Really?” She nodded. “Everyone has something they are afraid to reveal.” Her words carried a meaning he did not fully understand. Because she was right. Both of them were carrying secrets. “I think the right person will want to know the truth, even if it is difficult,” Lena added. Adrian looked away. Those words stayed with him. ... That night, Adrian returned home later than usual. The house was quiet. He found Claire sitting in the living room, looking through old photographs. For a moment, he saw their younger years. The beginning. Before responsibilities changed them. Before distance grew between them. Before they became two people trying to remember what they used to be. “You still keep those?” Adrian asked. Claire looked up. “Yes.” She looked down at the picture in her hand. “Sometimes I miss who we were.” Adrian felt the weight of her words. “I know.” Claire studied him. “Do you?” He remained silent. Because he knew he had been avoiding conversations that needed to happen. “You seem happier lately,” she said. Adrian looked at her. “I don’t want to hurt you.” Claire gave a sad smile. “Sometimes people hurt each other most when they avoid being honest.” The words stayed with him long after she walked away. ... The next morning, Lena received a call from Ethan. “Mom, are you busy?” She smiled. “For you? Never.” He laughed. “You always say that.” “Because it is true.” They talked about his studies, his plans, and the future he was building for himself. After ending the call, Lena sat quietly for a moment. She was proud of the young man he had become. But a small part of her heart wondered how long she could keep protecting the life they had built from the questions waiting around them. Ethan deserved honesty. Adrian deserved honesty. But the timing had to be right. Some truths could change everything once spoken. ... Later that evening, Adrian and Lena met for dinner. The conversation was lighter than usual. They laughed. They talked about dreams. They talked about the future. And for a while, they forgot about everything complicated waiting outside that moment. When Adrian dropped her home, Lena looked at him before getting out of the car. “I’m glad you came into my life.” The honesty in her voice touched him. Adrian looked at her. “I’m glad too.” She smiled and walked inside. Adrian stayed in the car for a few minutes after she left. He knew he could not hide the truth forever. One day, Lena would know everything. The only question was whether he would tell her himself or whether the truth would find its own way to her. And Adrian had learned one thing about secrets. They never stay hidden forever.
