Val's POV
When I walked into the training gym, I noticed Sarah trying and failing to climb the rock wall with one of the Alphas while staring, well, basically drooling over Kyle. That bothered me a bit, Kyle was a good friend and the older brother of Teira, the future Luna. And while Sarah might be boy crazy, that was no reason to be acting so obvious about it.
I had contacted Sarah from my old pack when the Alphas told me what the Luna had been doing to them and Teira ever since they started making their interest in her known. For some reason, the Luna believed ANY girl would be better than Tei, so she kept trying to get candidates set up as the future Luna for the Alphas.
Fortunately, since the issue with Whitley had made her end up in the cells, most of the shewolves in the pack had decided they weren't all that interested in being the future Luna. It helped that Luna Megan was a bit overwhelming when it came to teaching whatever candidate what they needed to know to fit the job, I had heard stories from maintaining weight and poise, to constantly making sure they knew how to be subservient and please the Alphas as well as the pack members.
My jaw had dropped at that information. There was no way the Alphas would take a Luna like that. The Alphas wanted a partner to help them run the pack, and Alpha Christian had never wanted nor treated Luna Megan like she needed to act that way. So, to prevent the Luna from constantly shoving other girls at the Alphas, I proposed to have a girl act like a candidate for Luna Megan to train so the Alphas could spend time with Tei without having to deal with everyday tantrums and fights between their parents.
Sarah was an excellent choice. She was the daughter of the Beta, she wasn't interested in being Luna, and she knew the Alphas since they were pups. The only problem was, she was boy crazy. She had been that way since we were young, following Alpha Tyler around whenever he wanted to get away from all the girls his mom threw at them whenever they visited Moon Valley. When he wouldn't hang out with her or acknowledge her, she'd retaliate by telling Luna Megan where he was. She only stopped when I wrestled her to the ground as Sarah was proud of her strength and hated to lose to anyone.
So watching her act that way towards Kyle made me angry, The male crazy pup thinks to claim what's not hers. Kyla, my wolf growled, and I fought to keep control. I had realized Kyle was my mate months ago and had started trying to get close to him during training, he wasn't 18 yet so he didn't know and I wanted to get to know him better before I told him. Kyle had been popular among the warriors and pack members due to his family's influence and his personality but I could tell most of it was a facade to appease his parents, when I had heard what had been happening with Teira and how he had been trying to protect her, that made me fall in love with him even more.
I walked over to the sparring ring just as Kyle put a shirt on, Kyla growled in my head, and I quickly pushed her to the back of my mind. Not now! I stated, and she huffed, This wouldn't be needed if we'd already claimed our mate. she stated as she retreated, and I rolled my eyes. I had been reluctant to tell Kyle we were mates as I worried he'd think I just wanted to get close to him or use him in some way, and now I was paying the price.
"Sarah having another droolfest?" I asked, trying to look nonchalant as Kyle's amazing abs disappeared under his shirt. Tyler laughed as Kyle shook his head, "Yeah, apparently one look at Kyle's body has put her in a daze." Tyler replied as Sarah nearly fell off the wall for the fifteenth time since I got here. Kyle blushed, "I don't understand why though, she met me at breakfast, though we didn't talk too much. Why is she this interested all of a sudden?" he asked, confused. I rolled my eyes, "Because she's male crazy, she usually isn't interested in males she doesn't know that well, but she saw something she liked." I responded as I stowed my gear in the corner and jumped into the ring.
Kyle flushed, "Well, is there a way to get her to stop?" he asked as he stood to the side while Tyler climbed in. I looked over at her as I stretched, Ryan was dragging her over to some other warriors to begin group training so she'd focus on something else other than Kyle. "Yeah, there is. Get someone else to beat her in a fight. If you fight her, it'll just make her more interested, but if you get another person, most likely a mated male or another female, she'll back off. Her pride is her weakness." I said as I squared up against the Alpha, and we began to spar.
Tyler was strong and fast and a perfect target to unleash my pent-up anger on. We punched, kicked, danced around, and pinned each other in the ring for a while before he turned towards me, "You know if you just claimed him, she'd back off." he murmured, and I flinched then dodged his coming punch at the last second. I grabbed his outstretched arm and flipped him on his back, "says the Alpha who hasn't claimed his sister yet." I retorted, noticing Kyle had walked over towards the group training, trying his best to stay out of Sarah's sight. Tyler frowned as he stood, "That's different, Tei has gone through a lot and has trust issues due to her family. We have to build it up slowly, but we plan on telling her at the Christmas party." he replied, "Kyle, on the other hand, doesn't have those issues."
I rolled my eyes, "No, he just had to watch as his sister was tormented and couldn't do anything about it because he didn't know who he could trust without making his parents wrath on his sister worse. And the Luna will throw a fit if you announce to the pack that Tei's your mate without her approval." I replied, trying to change the subject. Tyler shrugged, "Mom won't have a choice. She wants us to choose our mate and we've made our choice, it just won't be the one she wants. And Kyle's overcome that the same way Tei is. He knows who he can trust and who he can't now that his parents' crimes have come to light. Plus, he's not alone anymore in protecting Tei, and he knows that. So what's the real reason?" he asked.
I sighed and slumped, "I don't want him to think I'm using him. I'm scared he'll reject me. Or worse, Tei and him will grow to hate me." Tyler sat next to me and slung an arm around my shoulders in a comforting way, "Val, you aren't your parents." he murmured, and I flinched. "But I came from them." I stated quietly. Tyler sighed, "I came from my Mom, but I'm not going to end up forcing my pups to take a chosen mate just because I'm impatient or whatever reason Mom has." he said as he looked at me. I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye, "But your Mom didn't also try to sleep with every unmated male in the pack when her mate died or try to ruin everything he had built because she blamed him for leaving her." I said.
Tyler shook his head, "You're right. She didn't. But you're forgetting that you are the one who took over the businesses your Dad left as soon as you came of age and then brought your Mom before the Alpha to get her the help she needed. The point is, we aren't our parents. We make our own choices. Besides," he explained, nudging me as he removed his arm from around me, "I think Kyle is realizing that you're important to him too." he said, nodding in the direction of the group.
Kyle was staring at us with burning intensity. His eyes were turning dark, then slowly returning to blue when Tyler removed his arm and his growling was subsiding. Kyla did a happy dance in my head at the display, and I tried not to smile as I stood.
I continued sparring for a while, then headed towards the showers to wash up before heading to the packhouse for dinner. Tei would be back soon from her date with Alpha Matt and I needed to make sure her night clothes were laid out on the bed and that her room was cleaned properly before hearing the report for the night. As I showered, I thought about Kyle and what Tei would think about us being mates. I knew Kyle would never leave Tei behind, not even for his mate, and I would never ask him to. Sarah, on the other hand, wanted a mate that would cater to her every whim, and she couldn't sit still. She had always dreamed of seeing the world outside of the packs and had hoped her mate would love to travel as it was the only way she would escape from Moon Valley.
They may have stopped the chosen mate tradition, but they still had some outdated ideas.
I changed quickly and headed to my car, only to see Sarah and Kyle in the parking lot. Sarah was giggling at something Kyle had said and Kyle was trying to get in his car but Sarah was latched on tightly, I growled and drew closer not thinking when I heard Sarah say coyly, "You're so funny, Kyle, how about we go find something to eat just the two of us?" she asked. Kyle firmly pushed her away at that, making her jaw drop at the rejection, "No thank you, I've got other things to do." he stated as he got into his car and drove away before she could reply.
Before I could confront her, she stomped her foot and got into her vehicle as well, determination in her eyes. Kyla took over at that point and I shifted without realizing leaving my car and gear in the parking lot and taking off after Sarah, we weren't about to give our mate up to a male crazy shewolf.
We made it back to the packhouse quickly, and Kyla allowed me to take back over, Claim our mate, or kill the shewolf. she growled as I changed into spare clothes. I sighed and nodded as I hit the button for the elevator and headed up to the Alphas floor, Kyle would shower and change for dinner before heading down.
The doors opened, and Sarah was leaning into an angry Kyle trapped against the wall. I grabbed her by the collar and flung her to the floor, my eyes turning black and my claws extending, "HANDS OFF MY MATE!!!"
