Teira's POV
A knock on the door slowly woke me from my blissful sleep, I lay there for a moment, letting the sleep fade from my brain. Tyler groaned from beside me, cuddling close, "Go away!" he yelled grumpily when the knock sounded again.
I nudged him, "Tyler, that was rude." I said gently, trying to sit up. His arms tightened around my waist, followed by Matt tightening his hold on my hips and Ryan not letting go of my legs, his head still in my lap snoring softly.
"No, what was rude was whoever it is waking me up from a nice dream next to my princess. I'm comfy and don't want to move. They can come back later." he said firmly.
"Or not at all." grumbled Matt sleepily from behind me, nuzzling my back.
I huffed, trying not to giggle at their antics, "We can't stay here all day, Kyle's taking me out after lunch, remember?" I asked. Matt grunted, "He can do it tomorrow, sleep now." he said.
I did giggle and then sighed. They weren't going to give up. I tried to think of a way to get them to let go when the door opened with a bang, startling the triplets and causing them to push me behind them faster than I could blink.
A young woman stood in the doorway, smirking. Her caramel colored hair was tied back in a high ponytail wrapped around her head like a crown. Her eyes shone a clear amber color, and she smiled cheerfully, "Excellent reflexes, Alphas. Looks like you haven't been slacking." she said as she walked into the room.
The boys growled furiously, "What the h*ll Val! Why didn't you knock like a normal person!" Tyler yelled angrily. The woman, Val, stopped just short of attack range, crossing her arms and staring the boys down firmly, "I DID knock, Alpha. You didn't hear me or respond. My job is to make sure you are alright. So I took matters into my own hands." she stated sternly.
Tyler glared, Matt looked stubborn and poor Ryan was shaking his head, trying to get the cobwebs of sleep out of his head, "Val, I believe Tyler called out. Did you not hear him?" he asked seriously. Val flinched, then huffed, "Of course I heard him, but 'Go away' is not a normal response when someone knocks on the door." she said flippantly.
"It is if someone is spending time with their girlfriend and wishes NOT to be disturbed!" Tyler blurted hotly. My face heated, and I smacked him on the back of the head, "You really don't think before you speak, do you?" I asked. He looked at me confused and then smirked, "Get used to it, princess." he murmured before stepping aside so I could see the woman clearer.
She was tall, a few inches taller than Kyle, and pretty, her heart-shaped face glowed in the light from the window. She was obviously a warrior, from the tone of her muscles and the scar that lit up the left side of her neck. She looked at me, studying me the same way I was her, then she smiled, "You're cute and fiesty. I like that." she said, holding out her hand. I took it, a bit confused but smiled back, "Thanks, you're fierce. I like that as well." I replied, shaking her hand. Her grip was strong but gentle. She knew how to use her strength.
Ryan coughed politely, causing both of us to look at him, "Teira, this is Valerie James. She is one of the best warriors in the pack. She'll be your guard from now on. Val, this is Teira Harris, our girlfriend." he said, introducing us. I blushed at the label, I had just agreed to go out with them, so I wasn't used to the title. Valerie smirked, "Nice to meet you, Teira. I hope you give these guys a run for their money." she said jokingly. I smiled, "We'll see Valerie, I trust you'll guard me well." I replied politely.
She scoffed, "Please, call me Val. We're going to be around each other a lot of no point in being so formal. But I'll guard you with my life." she said, placing her left fist over her heart and kneeling down on one knee. I looked at her startled, "I appreciate that, Val. But please don't bow before me, I'm not that important." I said, helping her to stand. Val looked behind me, a twinkle in her eye, but nodded, "Alright, now lunch is being served, and I'm sure you must be hungry. Alphas, your father needs to see you as well." she said.
The triplets groaned but nodded, and I had a feeling they wouldn't have let me leave the room if they could help it, despite Kyle waiting on me. Val shoved them out of the room and then closed the door on their pouting faces, "She'll see you in a few minutes! Just go!" she called through the closed door to their grumblings.
I giggled and then went into the bathroom, I grabbed a new toothbrush and toothpaste that was sitting on the counter and began to brush my teeth. I heard Val shuffling around the room, tsking at certain things, and I began to dread going back in the bedroom.
I braced myself for the welcome I would receive after Val seeing the state of my clothes and walked into the room. To my surprise, there was a pink blouse, a pair of my good jeans, socks and my tennis shoes laying on the bed. My suitcase was in the entrance to the closet open, but it just looked like Val put some things away.
I looked at her confused, and she shrugged, "I'm your guard/attendant. Most personal guards only guard the people they are assigned to. The Alpha, however, thought that you could use someone to help you with the more feminine side of things." she said gently. I blushed and went over to my suitcase, I found a good pair of underwear and a bra that wasn't too ragged and put them on, then looked at the blouse, "This isn't mine." I murmured, holding it up. It looked too delicate for someone like me to wear.
Val smiled, "It was in one of the garment bags in the closet. I think the Alpha had some clothes gifted to you when he had this room set up." she said. I smiled and put the blouse on. It was light and fluffy like a cloud but thick enough that the winter chill wouldn't bother me. I finished dressing, and Val sat me down in front of the mirror. She picked up a brush and began to gently work the knots out of my curls.
I looked at her in the mirror, "I take it you know of my situation? The Alpha filled you in?" I asked sadly. She smiled, "I have to know the details to know who to look out for and why I'm guarding you. But, I'm the only one he told besides the future Alphas. I don't think the Luna even knows the whole story." she said as she pulled my hair back into a ponytail and curled the end. She then turned me around and held up some lip gloss, "I'm going to give this to you to put on your lips after lunch. Ok?" I nodded and took it from her, placing it in my pocket. "I don't understand why I'm dressing up, though Val, I'm just going to the mall with Kyle." I said a bit confused.
Val smiled, "Honey, just because you're going on an outing with your brother doesn't mean you shouldn't look your best. Plus, we're going to get you more things to make you look even better. I did the best I could with what I had, but you are going to definitely need more than this. The state of some of your clothes is outrageous." she said firmly. I looked down, embarrassed, but she pulled my chin up gently. "I'm not criticizing you, I'm criticizing those a**h*les you call parents. One of them is a fashion designer for Selene's sake! And she gives her daughter rags to wear?!" she ranted.
I smiled. It was odd having someone other than the triplets or Kyle be angry on my behalf, but Val made me feel like we'd been friends for years instead of minutes. I stood up from the vanity, and Val nodded, "Now let's head down to lunch and see how many eyes can stay off you." she said, and I giggled as she followed me down the hall.
When the elevator stopped on the ground floor and the doors opened, I moved to get off, but Val stepped in front of me, keeping me behind her protectively. "May I help you?" she asked whoever was standing in front of the doors.
"I want to speak to Teary." A familiar voice growled. I groaned internally. Of course, Whitley wouldn't leave me alone. It sounded like her crows were with her, too. Val didn't budge c*****g her head to the side she crossed her arms in front of her, "I don't know anyone by that name. And I do believe the elevator is off-limits to pack members unless they are a guest of the Alpha or Luna." she stated sternly.
I heard a foot stomp, "I AM a guest of the Luna. Whitley Pierce and I came to speak with Teary Harris, the loser behind you!" Whitley shrieked. Val didn't flinch or move, she just leaned into Whitley's face calmly, "The only loser, I see around here is you. Guest of the Luna or not, you do not get to ambush people coming out of the elevator. Try it again and you'll face me on the training grounds." she said seriously.
Whitley didn't say anything, Val stood there looking at them and shook her head, "MOVE!" she barked and I heard a large scrambling of feet as they all scurried away. I admit, even I flinched at that yell. Val turned towards me and smiled, "Coast is clear, shall we?" she asked as she stepped aside to let me out.
I gawked at her for a second before walking out of the elevator towards the dining hall, Val following close behind me.
I think I have a new best friend.
