The wind died down with the lightning and thunder, clothing the earth with a deafening silence. Hannah walked slowly towards Olivia. I was still trembling with fear as I followed her. I gasped to see Olivia in a pitiful state. Her eyes were hanging from her eye sockets, and her mouth was opened wide as her flesh melted gradually into something sticky and watery that I couldn’t even describe.
I fell down on my knees and sobbed, “Olivia.”
“That would have been your fate, Maddie,” Hannah said in a low voice.
She knelt down to join me as we shared our grief over another death from one of our friends. Olivia may have been mean towards me, but she didn’t deserve this kind of death. That should have been me.
