We had been home a week, and what a week it had been, every night the last thing I did was watch Bri as she slept, falling asleep to the sound of her breathing, she makes the cutest little snore.
I loved being the last person she spoke to every night. Loved knowing that when she closed her eyes, maybe—just maybe—she dreamed of me. Because she was the star of all my dreams, and it only seemed fair.
Now, a week later, it had become my favourite part of the day. The calls. The laughter. The way her voice softened when she said his name. And tonight, he had news—big news. News that could change everything.
The biggest part of the week was on Thursday, he, Tim and Dan were once again at his house for poker night, that night they had a special guest, who invited herself to join us by video chat.
Poor Tim was lost for words, halfway between being completely smitten and terrified, Gem had him so twisted in knots, it was hilarious.
The poker was a lot of fun but as the evening had moved on the conversation had somehow turned to our dreams of the future.
Tim and Dan have both noticed that I am not as happy as I could be, but Gem has a very special gift, she has no filter, absolutely none.
So when she noticed that I had gone quiet she called me out, asking me ‘how much more money do you need to make before you can say screw it, it's time for me to live my life.’
And that started my friends off, all three ripping my life apart, and egging me to make a change and then Dan pulled out the deal breaker. I smile now as I remember his throw away comment that may just have changed my life.
“Well Lewis Write has got feelers out, he is looking to expand into the cyber sector.”
And that was that, it is now Monday morning and after an all day meeting on Friday and way too many calls over the weekend, I am now signing the over the deeds to my company.
It will take about a month for the sale to go through, and I am a very happy man, a very happy, ridiculously rich man.
Now all I want to do is tell Bri, I glanced at the clock on the wall and grinned, her parcel should be there by now.
Picking up his phone he tapped on her contact picture and held the phone to his ear, it had barely ran twice when her breathless voice filled his ear.
“Bast!”
“Hey baby, did you get the parcel?”
In the background he heard Sky squeal, “fanks for my pwesents, Sebby, I loves them so much.” he chuckled at her adorable little voice.
“You are more than welcome princess; we couldn’t let mama get all the goodies, could we?”
Her giggle was adorable and he heard Bri tell her to play with her toys for a minute, “so? What's the big news?”
I grinned at the excitement in her voice, “I don’t know, maybe I should wait until tonight to tell you.”
Sge actually growled down the phone at me making me laugh out loud, “okay, okay, sooo are you sitting down?”
“Bast, I swear, just tell me.”
Her exasperated tone made me grin, “I’ve sold my company.” the line went silent and for a moment I thought she had hung up, and then her quite whisper.
“You sold it? When? To who? Oh my goodness, Bast this is huge.”
Laughing in called for her to calm down, she was firing questions left and right, “it’s okay baby, calm down, if I am honest with myself, its something I have wanted for a long time, it is going to take a little bit for everything to be finalised, but in about a month, I will be unemployed. Will you still want to talk to me then?”
She giggled down the phone, “I don’t know, I kinda like having you ready for tech support, what will I do if my new tablet breaks or something? I mean life could end.”
She sighed down the phone, “I am really proud of you Bast, and Sam is too.” I swallowed the lump in my throat.
“Thank you Bri, you don’t know how much that means to me. So thats my news, what is going on in Montana>”
She went quiet, too quiet, “Bri? Has something happened?” Now I am thinking of all that could have gone wrong, has her terror of a mother-in-law caused even more trouble?
“Umm, well I...umm” she sighed and I could almost see her taking a deep breath. “Okay, so I received a copy of the Comfort Gazette today, I don’t even remember subscribing but...”
She paused for way to long, I was on the edge of my seat.
“Well you know the bakery, umm Sweet things?” I let out a breath, glad that it wasn’t anything to worry about, “yeah, I loved that place, what about it?”
“God, Gem is gonna kill me for telling you this first, but Doris the owner has decided to sell.......and I am thinking of putting in an offer.....I mean its crazy right, I should slap myself and forget about it, right?”
I took a deep breath, thinking of the right words to use, “baby, Gem told me that the bakery was almost exactly like a picture you drew in college, it was your dream to own it one day, well today is that day, it’s time to fly Bri.”
I paused, we have never talked about money, I know most of her arguments with Jaxon’s mother was over his insurance money, but I really didn’t know her financial status.
“I really don’t want to know details darling, but can you afford it? Because if you need...”
She cut me off with a chuckle, “stop Bast, I haven’t touched Jaxon’s insurance money, and Greg at the bank helped me invest most of it, so I am pretty sure I can easily do it, I just need to speak to Greg.......You don’t think I am crazy? I mean I have lived in this town my whole life, I was born in this house...”
“But are you happy baby? Do you get up in the morning and jump into the day with joy? Because I don’t think you do.”
She let out a huge sigh, “but what if I fail?” she whispered it so quietly I almost didn’t catch it, “But what if you don’t? What if you soar? And what about Sky, is Montana where you want her to grow up? With the gossip and small mindedness?”
She sighed again, but this time it sounded like a sigh with perpose, “I guess I had better pay a visit to the bank then.”
I grinned, “that's my girl.”
