Chapter 8 Uncertainty Katherine's POV “Katherine… would you actually consider marrying me?” The moment I heard that from him, my breath completely hitched. As I stood there, thinking of what he just said to me, Dave's eyes never left me. They remained glued on me, like I would disappear if he as much as blink. He was anticipating my answer, but I had none to give him because of how impromptu, and unexpected his proposal was. The look in his eyes, weren't out of pity, or mockery that I was a mess. It was the one demandingly for answers. Behind us, my family stood in shock, as none of them understood what was really going in. Then, I blinked slowly, hoping to wake up from my dream. I really hoped that he wasn't doing all that to get back at Diana or my family. "What...?" "I only asked a question that needs an answer," Dave said calmly. It was still strange to me how his voice remained calm in such situation. But looking into his blue eyes, the intensity inside almost made me lose my composure. "You can't seriously be making such request," I whispered back. "I am damn serious with everything." Unconsciously, I didn't know when my fingers tightened around the edge of the small box near me. He's talking about marriage? How can I even i agree to marry a man I barely know? It wasn't up to 24 hours that I met him, and he's already proposing marriage? That's completely insane. Yet... When I turned back, to see my family standing behind me, and those at the entrance of the mansion, I knew mh choice would be different. To think that Felix was shamelessly standing beside Diana? The same Felix who once promised me forever, not once, but countless times. The same man who kissed my forehead every morning before work, acting all nice, and keeps a lot ng faced whenever I'm sad. The same man who cheated on me with my own sister, and feels no remorse about it. Who turned around to see me ax the Villian. And to think that beside him stood the family I spent years loving with everything in me? People who threw me away like I was nothing when I needed their warm embrace the most. My chest burned uncontrollably, as flashes of the pain I had endured in their hands started resurfacing. Dave suddenly stepped closer again, and I couldn't help but wonder his reason, what what he needed. “You don’t need to give me an answer immediately.” I looked up at him slowly, still not understanding the reason for his proposal one bit. But he seemed like a sweet man. “You can think about it first.” Diana suddenly laughed loudly behind us, and I wished I could cross over and smack her face for putting us in such a mess. “Oh my God, this is ridiculous.” But I was able to ignore her like she was nothing. I can't give her the privilege that she obviously doesn't deserve. Dave ignored her too, and that even made my day more beautiful. But Felix suddenly frowned. “You’re seriously trying to marry her out of nowhere?” Dave finally looked at him directly, and I swear, I saw him tremble a little. “Yes.” Felix’s jaw tightened immediately, as it was obvious she wanted me frustrated and miserable. I couldn't help but wonder what I could have done to deserve such conspiracy from those I call my family. “And she’ll agree?” he scoffed, niw smiling like he was a big prize to be won. That question irritated me strangely. How dare he think so highly of himself? Before Dave could answer, I spoke first. I might have done that without thinking, but I can't let Felix have the lart laugh, not again. “What exactly is that supposed to mean?” Felix looked surprised hearing my cold tone. He was only used to the version of me that is very soft, that allowed many things in the name of love. “You know what I mean, Katherine.” “No,” I snapped angrily. “Explain it clearly to me, maybe that would help clear me.” Diana rolled her eyes dramatically. “He means you’re being desperate if you accept this strange man in your life.” Dave’s expression darkened instantly, and I could tell his past with Diana resurfaced at that point. But before he could speak, I laughed softly, because to me, it was all a game. But it was actually the kind of laugh people make before breaking completely. “Desperate?” I repeated. Diana folded her arms confidently. “Obviously, even a one year old can see it." I slowly nodded, but I wasn't going to let her win, not ever again. “That's quite interesting.” Then I looked directly into her eyes. “The same man you dumped because he was supposedly poor is suddenly valuable again now that he’s rich.” Her expression changed immediately, as she never imagined such a a day would come that I will challenge her that much. “You..” “And as for you, Felix,” I continued coldly, “the same man who cheated on me is suddenly questioning why another man wants me?” There was silence, as he couldn't say anything. He had nothing to say. Felix looked irritated immediately, as they plan for me wasn't what was playing out before them. “Katherine...” “No,” I interrupted sharply before he could finish that sentence. It took Dave coming into my life for me to know that I was done crying. J was completely done with begging for acceptance, to be loved. I was done acting weak, and giving them a million reasons to take advantage of me. “I loved you genuinely,” I said quietly. “But now? Looking at you disgusts me.” His face hardened instantly, and I knew I was making progress. It felt so nove seeing him kind that, because I wanted it to hurt. Dave glanced at me briefly, but said nothing. Not even his face said a word, as he stayed unreadable. Just blank. Then he calmly took the box from my hand again. “We should take our leave now.” This time, I didn’t resist him. Honestly…I couldn’t stay there another second, as that house was full of toxicity. It would be all better to start something with a stranger, than being in the same space with those creatures. The moment we entered the black uxury car outside, my entire body relaxed slightly. The warmth inside the car immediately wrapped around me, something I haven't experienced in a long while. I closed my eyes briefly yo take in every bit of the moment. This was peace finally. Dave was sitting beside me quietly while the driver started moving, but neither of us spoke for almost two minutes. Then suddenly......
