Selene’s POV
The air was thick with the scent of blood and smoke as I ran, my heart pounding so violently I thought it might burst. Kieran’s cold confession replayed in my mind, each word stabbing my heart, but there was no time to dwell on the betrayal. The rogues were here, and my parents were in danger
I had to find them.
My dress snagged on the rough stone walls as I bolted through the corridor, the lace tearing, but I didn’t care. My lungs burned, but the fear driving me forward was far greater than any physical discomfort. I had to reach them. I had to make sure they were safe.
I could see the chaos unfolding when I reached the pack’s great hall. Windows shattered as rogues stormed in, their snarls and growls filling the air. They were everywhere—beasts with wild eyes and blood-stained teeth, tearing through anything and anyone in their path. I fought back the rising panic, scanning the room desperately for any sign of my parents.
“Mother!” I screamed, hoping my voice was loud enough to get to her. Where were they? Moon Goddess, please let them be safe.
As I continued glancing around, I froze up. A few meters away, my eyes met those of one of the rogues, baring its teeth at me as it charged forward. I held my breath and shut my eyes, waiting for it to jump on me and tear me apart, but that never happened.
Opening my eyes, I saw another wolf had tackled the rogue to the ground. I released the breath I was holding and backed away.
"Selene!" My mother’s voice pierced through the chaos, and I turned, spotting her just ahead. Her long brown hair was loose, flying around her face as she ran toward me, her eyes wide with fear.
"Mother!" I cried out, relief flooding through me as I sprinted toward her.
She grabbed my arm, her grip tight, her nails digging into my skin. "We have to go! Your father’s waiting for us—there’s no time!"
I could feel her fear, her desperation as she tugged me along, weaving through the crumbling hallways of our home. The air was suffocating, heavy with the stench of sweat, blood, and death. I could hear the howls of the rogues growing louder and closer.
We turned a corner and rushed down a hidden passageway I’d almost forgotten existed. It was an escape route, built by my ancestors for emergencies like this, though I’d never imagined we’d need to use it. The walls were tight and cold, and the air musty and old.
I could barely see in the darkness, but my mother’s grip on my arm kept me moving forward. We reached the end of the passage, and my father was there, waiting. His face was grim, his brow furrowed in concentration as he worked to open a hidden door I hadn’t even known existed.
My father, the most potent Alpha I’d ever known, looked... worried. And if he was afraid, I couldn’t imagine what awaited us outside. He finally got the door open, revealing a small, hidden room lined with old books and a single narrow window. My mother pushed me inside, her hands shaking as she hurried me through.
"Selene, wait here and make no noise. We’ll be safe here," she whispered, her eyes glassy with unshed tears.
"No matter what happens, stay hidden." My father gave a stiff nod
“What about you two? I thought you just said we’ll be safe here?” The words rushed out of my mouth as panic hit me.
“Selene, please do what we ask of you! " my mother raised her voice, ignoring my question.
“No, no, do not do this, please, do—” My father kissed my forehead, his rough hand lingering on my cheek for just a moment as he cut my protests off.
"I love you, my princess," he said, his voice thick with emotion.
Tears gathered almost immediately in my eyes as I shook my head in disagreement.
“I love you as well, my Selene.” My mother smiled, stroking my cheek.
And then they were gone, closing the door behind them with a soft click. The darkness threatened to swallow me whole if not for the torchlight hung up on the wall. I pressed my back against the cold stone wall, trying to steady my breathing, but it was useless.
My chest ached, my hands trembling as I hugged myself, trying to make sense of everything. How did it come to this? How had my entire world fallen apart in just a matter of minutes? I could hear the sounds of the battle drawing closer, the snarls and crashes growing louder.
Then there were voices. Familiar voices. My heart skipped a beat as I recognized Kieran’s cold, deep tone.
"Where is she?" His demanding voice echoed through the walls, cruel and menacing. I could barely breathe as I moved closer to the door.
"I don’t know where she is!" My mother’s voice trembled with defiance, but I could hear the fear underlying her words.
"Tell me where she is, or you’ll join your mate in the afterlife soon," Kieran’s voice was colder than ice.
My hands flew to my mouth as a sob threatened to escape. Father…
“I won’t tell you!” My mother’s voice was strong, but a sharp gasp broke it. And then, silence.
The next thing I heard was a sickening thud, followed by a choking sound. I shook my head as my mother’s heart-wrenching scream bounced off the wall.
I pressed my hands harder against my mouth, trying to stifle the sobs that threatened to tear me apart, but it was too much. The pain, the fear—it was overwhelming.
A soft, involuntary sound escaped my throat. Everything went still. For a moment, the air felt too thick to breathe; the only sound was my shallow, ragged breathing.
Then Kieran’s voice cut through the silence like a blade. “Check behind that door.”
Immediately, his words filtered into my ears, and I scrambled to my feet. My heart pounded as I pushed myself against the far wall as if I could somehow disappear into the stone.
But it was too late. I could hear his footsteps approaching, slow and deliberate. The door pushing open.
The next few moments were a blur of terror and adrenaline. The door burst open, and before Kieran could grab me, my mother threw herself between us, her hands raised in a futile attempt to stop him.
“Run, Selene!” she screamed, her voice filled with desperation. “Run!”
I didn’t think I couldn’t. My feet moved on instinct as I bolted out of the hidden room, my heart pounding so loudly in my ears that I could barely hear anything else.
Behind me, I heard the sickening sound of my mother’s body hitting the floor, followed by her final, breathless gasp, which echoed loudly in my head. But I couldn’t stop. I couldn’t look back.
Tears blurred my vision and streamed down my face as I ran through the halls, my breath coming in ragged gasps. Weaving through the chaos I had first left behind, I burst out of the packhouse and into the night, my bare feet pounding against the cold earth as I ran into the woods.
I could hear the paws of the rogues chasing after me and hitting the earth louder than my foot did.
As I thought they would catch me, wolves rushed out from the trees before me, taking down the rogues in a violent clash of fur and claws.
A tree branch caught my foot just then, and I fell flat. I was sitting back up almost immediately and watching as more wolves came out of the trees and fought back the rogues. A middle-aged woman in a tee and knickers stepped out of the trees and squatted before me with a smile.
“Your wedding dress has gone through a lot, but we’ve got you. You’re safe now.”
But did I feel safe?
