Not as it seems

Emilia And just like that, I saw myself walking down the aisle in an extravagant wedding dress the evening of Saturday– A wedding gown that clearly shows my mother’s taste as she was the one who had hurriedly made the arrangements while I was busy getting pissed at Enzo. My mind went to the things that he said to me last night during the engagement party, and I felt my cheeks flushing with warmth. He was a whole red walking banner, but I still didn’t get the memo to back out. Don’t blame me. Enzo is irresistibly hot, and I thought that it would get better with time. None of that mattered; not even the way his gaze was cold and hard as I walked down the aisle to meet him. “Hi,” I smiled sweetly as we finally faced each other, “Ready to be a husband now?” My smile was met with an indifferent and aloof look. “Let’s just get this over with and go our separate ways” His words burned a hole in my heart and my smile immediately faded. The pain felt sharp, like sharp strands of glass embedded into my heart. This wasn’t the behavior of a man who had truly proposed marriage to a woman he claimed he wanted. Perhaps he was nervous as well about the whole thing? Maybe he was getting cold feet and jitters? I clung to that excuse desperately, blinking back tears repeatedly as we took our vows. “…with the power vested in me, I declare you husband and wife. You may now kiss your bride,” the officiant said, concluding the vows. I waited in anticipation, my heart beating so loud that I bet every other person in the church could hear it as well. “We’ll have to skip that part, pastor. Not very interested” Enzo said, causing the crowd to gasp. The shock that I felt was quickly replaced by an awkward smile. My years of being the Assistant managing director at my parent’s company had helped train me to be ready for unforeseen situations just like this. “We agreed that we would wait until our wedding night before having any intimate contact,” I said to the priest, eliciting a smile from him. “Keeping the marriage bed undefiled” The rest of the ceremony went well, and soon enough, the wedding party started. I looked everywhere for Enzo but couldn’t find him. Not until I saw him frolicking with one of the female guests in a corner, and dunking himself in alcohol. “Do you think you could excuse me and my husband? I need to talk to him” I said as politely as I could to the brunette who was almost close to planting her lips on Enzos’. She totally ignored me and continued fussing over Enzo. I scoffed, the fighter in me straining to come out. Perhaps if it wasn’t because I was trying to protect the image of my father’s company, I would have dragged the b***h from her hair to the outside, making sure to leave a big, bald spot in the center. It wasn’t until Enzo shooed her away that she left, after giving me a long, hard stare. Like I said, she was lucky that I had an image to protect. She would have met the WrestleMania in me. “Aren’t you supposed to be receiving congratulations from the guests on your wedding?” Enzo asked, pouring more champagne into his empty glass. “Don’t you think you’ve had enough drinks for now? Do you want to get drunk on your wedding night?” “Why? Am I not allowed to have a few drinks too? Do you want to strip me of the right to do this as well just as your father forced me to do what I never wanted to do?” Exasperation filled my tone as I replied. “I’m looking out for you, Enzo. And what were doing, flirting with that girl? Don’t you understand that the media is on the prowl, looking for cover stories? The only person who should be that snuggled up to you is your wife, not a stranger” “You sound like you can’t wait to have me on your bed. Are you that desperate for the touch of this man whom you barely know?” His voice was cold and bitter, and the way he looked at me like I was some pest invading his personal space unnerved me. But I placed a smile on my face, not wanting the public to suspect anything. “You degrade me at every chance you get, and you make me feel like I trapped you into something you never wanted to do. Do I need to remind you that you were the one who came to my parents and declared that you wanted us to get married?” He laughed bitterly, the coldness in his voice unmistakable. “I love your level of delusion. It goes well with that pretty face” he said and stood, dropping the glass on the table close to me. And without looking back, he left the party, leaving me standing all alone. I took deep, shaky breaths, trying to calm myself down. “Is everything okay with you two? I saw Enzo driving off without you. Did you two have a fight?” I turned and saw my mother hurrying over to me. This wasn’t the time for any of her banters and I certainly wasn’t in the mood. The statement that he had made struck me again, and I decided to ask her. “Mamma…by any chance, was it father’s idea for Enzo to…” I trailed off, realizing how stupid I sounded. “Never mind. We had a little misunderstanding and he decided to leave first. I’ll be going now too.” She smiled and kissed me on both cheeks. “Alright, sweetheart. I think he already designated a driver for you. Call me when you get there safely, alright?” I nodded and walked out of the hall into the car park. There, a middle-aged man with a chaffer uniform smiled kindly at me. “Mr. Lomardo has assigned me to take you to the mansion, senora” He walked over to the back door and opened it, gesturing for me to go in. “If you may, senora?” I got in, thinking about the possibilities of what might happen on my first night with Enzo. He sounded really pissed about something, and I hoped that by the time I got to his house, he would have calmed down. Soon enough, we got to the mansion. It was very magnificent and totally worth all the hype. When the chauffeur drove in, I noticed that the security signaled something to him as he got out and tried to open my side of the door. I wasn’t very big on signals so I didn’t understand what was going on. “What’s going on? I asked, ducking my head out of the window seat. The driver, who looked slightly unnerved glanced around nervously. “I’m sorry ma’am. But we received direct orders from Mr. Lambardo not to let you into the house until he gets back” Laughter erupted from me as what he had just said sounded like a joke to me. They really expected me to sit in the car and wait for Enzo until he came back from wherever the hell he went to before I could go into the house and rest? “Do you not see how tired I am? I need to take a shower and get some sleep.” “I’m sorry, ma’am. Mr Lambardo said to tell you that you can pull the seat back and rest your back while waiting for him.” He bowed slightly and looked at me with pity in his eyes. “I’ll leave now” “What? Hey! Let me out!” The car windows started to slowly roll up, and before I could gather the hem of my wedding dress to get out of th e car, I heard the locks of the doors click.
