Chapter 42Since the incident at the café, everyone is on edge. The cafe was the main focal point of the town and it was the place where people met on a regular basis. There used to be weekly meetings of groups to play cards or draughts, and the pétanque club met there to discuss the league. Without the café, the town feels dead. People no longer congregate in the street to talk, because they would much rather hurry back to the safety of their homes. When they walk past me they no longer greet me, or stop to pass the time of day. Instead, they avert their eyes and walk quickly on. It's as if, in some way, they hold me responsible for their troubles. Two weeks have passed without any sign of Edvard Albert, but it makes no difference, his presence is still felt here and it overwhelms everyon
