Once we were dismissed, Hazel moved quickly and got me far away from Zane and Amelia as fast as possible. We knew they were eyeing me, and we didn’t want to deal with them unless necessary. Ryan was one of our bunkmates and came in after us. “So they seriously trust opposite genders to behave in the same cabin? That is bright.” Ryan sarcastically said as he claimed one of the top bunks. “Well, we can fix that by having girls on the left and boys on the right,” Hazel said, getting everyone’s full attention as the rest walked in.
“If we do that, where the f**k do you think you’ll be sleeping, you damn tranny.” A demon with multi-blue color short hair named Felix said as he walked past us. I threw my bag at their head and gave off a wolf-like growl, earning Ryan’s attention and interest. “I don’t give a f**k if I am just a lonely human. Disrespect my friend like that again, and I’ll show you who the real demon is, you little boy.” Everyone just stared at me for a moment before clapping.
“So no f*****g with the feisty human. Noted.” An imp in human form named Jaya said while claiming one of the bottom bunks.
I faked out Felix to make him flinch and smirked at him. Hazel giggled before taking me to one of the back bunks to claim. As I sat on the top bunk, she called dibs on the top bunk. “Works with me. Less likely to disturb people with my clumsy human ways by being on the bottom bunk.” I said, making Hazel pout at me.
“Is anyone else wondering why a Human is bunking with us, though, and not the Mages?” Sora the Kitsune, aka fox shifter, asked as she sat on her bunk. Everyone looked at me curiously. I instantly felt self-conscious about my surroundings and just looked at my feet.
“Because I bribed the Dean of the camp.”
We all looked up at Ryan as he leaned against the latter of his bunk. “The mages are the human’s childhood bullies. I didn’t want to deal with constantly saving her from them. Especially because their bullying always finds a way to cross the line.” I looked away again and just started to get settled in. We had chests with locks under the beds. Two sets per bunk bed in the room. I just pulled out one and ignored the others talking about me.
Hazel sat beside me and joined me in unpacking. We both went to head out of the cabin once we finished when the Sora stepped in front of me. “Don’t bring back any trouble, human. As Ryan said, we rather not have to save your weak ass.” She said while glaring at me. “Oh, shut up, fox. She doesn’t need you to save her. She has a vampire willing to protect her in a heartbeat.”
I sighed and rubbed the back of my neck. “Hazel, can we just go? No need to start a fight. She is just reminding me that I have to protect myself. They don’t want to deal with the Mages.” I said, pulling at Hazel’s arm. “Especially since half of them here are bonded as familiars to a Mage.” I side-eyed Ryan before leaving the cabin.
Hazel soon followed as we walked along the beach. “I don’t know why we need two mages for the camp,” Hazel complained as she watched the sunset with me. Vampires that were born were the only ones that could walk in the sun without magic to protect them. It was great because it allowed Hazel to hang out with me without fear. “I think it’s because we have mages with familiar and mages that don’t have one yet. Remember the mage curse.”
She groaned as I reminded her of the supernatural Mage’s curse she hated. Mages gained so much more power when they got familiars. The downside is that familiars were treated like slaves and abused by the mages primarily because of their power trip. Not all Mages were assholes, but sadly, most were.
“Is that why you won’t let me turn you? Since it will make you a familiar possibility?” Hazel asked as she started walking in reverse to look at me. “I actually never thought of that, but now it is.” I chuckled as Hazel pouted. Realizing she added to my reasons to say no.
“Hazel, being human isn’t a bad thing.” She just shrugged but jumped, surprised when Ryan joined us. He moved fast enough that I didn’t see him either. “Don’t worry, Hazel. I can always change her, too. Mia would make a great wolf. She feisty like one.” He said while throwing his arm around my shoulders. Ryan's words made Hazel give me a smuggle look and smirk. I sighed and shook my head, making his arm fall from my shoulders.
“Does your presence here mean you are done hiding our friendship?” I asked as I looked at Ryan. He looked around and sulked. His lack of response answered the question alone. “I wish there was a way we could break the Familiar bonds on our end. Who the hell’s sin are we paying for?” He complained as a strange wave of guilt washed over me. “I know, right!” Hazel joined his complaint.
I was about to say something when an announcement from the loudspeaker summoned all the counselors to the cafeteria hall. We all headed towards the entrance, with Hazel beside me and Ryan way ahead. The man had such severe bipolar episodes that I’m surprised I didn’t have whiplash from his behavioral swings. The cafeteria was a bit worse than Ryan personally switched. The hall had changed from where we all ate to a dance hall.
“I put money on it that this was all the Mage’s doing,” Hazel whispered to me after looking around.
She wasn’t wrong, however. Evidently, the Mages used their magic objects were floating around still. I looked at everyone admiring their work and felt my guilt turn into sadness. It finally hit me that this would be my final year enjoying the wonders of the supernatural world.
“Aw, is the little human not a fan of all the hard work we put into decorating?” Amelia said as she came towards me with her arms crossed. “You shoulder be more thankful since you’ll never see any of this next year.” I knew she wasn’t a mind reader, but it was annoying how she thought she could come at me again.
“Amelia, you did a wonderful job. The cafeteria looks beautiful.” I said, forcing a smile on my face. She arched an eyebrow and squinted at me. “Thank you?” I was so glad Hazel swooped in and pulled me towards the food before I had to deal with Amelia further.
“f**k her, and look at all this yummy food.” Hazel rubbed her hands together before getting a plate of food.
My best friend was a character, and I felt blessed to call her my bestie. Hazel and I ate and grooved until someone slammed my plate of food in my face. Soon after, a gust of wind pushed at the back of my knees, forcing me to fall back on my ass. All that was heard was laughter from two people as I groaned. “Damn, couldn’t get her to hit her head?”
I whipped the food off my face to look at Zane since he was the voice that spoke. “You two really haven’t grown up.” Hazel hissed as her dark burgundy eyes changed to a glowing red of rage. Ryan was holding her back, but his expression showed that it was an order from Zane. “Oh, behave, little vampy, or should we call you tranny?” Amelia said, smirking demonically.
My cabin bunkmates looked at me a bit concerned since they knew insulting Hazel’s sexuality triggered me. A dragon growl escaped me as I slowly got up and stared at Amelia while imagining how many ways to hurt her.
‘Attack her. I will help.’
A warm, soothing voice caressed the flames of my anger, and I felt heat throughout my entire body. I didn’t know who was talking to me, but I loved how it made me feel strong. “You really need to watch your tongue, you f*****g slut.” Amelia glared at me, but her expression changed when she looked eyes.
“Don’t talk about my girl like that!” Zane growled. His abilities from his familiar bond appeared. His emerald eyes became darker as he glared at me. “Oh, so you are straight? I thought you were gay, with how you look at Ryan.” My words anger him more.
‘Destroy them.’
The sweet voice echoed again in my ear as Zane charged at me. A fair-skinned yet tall man stepped between us and clotheslined Zane. The impact of Zane’s body on the ground startled everyone when he dropped hard. “You two know violence is frowned upon here. Mages aren’t above anyone here, so behave, or I will show you why even this human is protected by dragons. Even though she is powerless.”
Hazel grabbed my arm and pulled me closer as the handsome Korean man with amber-golden eyes looked back at me. “Mia, you okay?” I looked up at her, confused, as she used her phone to take a picture of me quickly. So I could see my dark brown eyes now glowing electric blue. “What the hell?”
‘Use the power…..help me.’
I looked around to try and see where the voice was coming from. No longer angry, it allowed me to be concerned about who was calling out to me. The voice was fading, but I could still lock on it. I stared at a window that only showed the darkness the forest held.
Who was calling me? Were they the reason my eyes showed signs of a magical connection?
