Awake

Chapter 2- Awake- Solara POV As my eyes opened, I was greeted by a hazy veil glowing bright white. Blinking to clear the haze, the bright light above me illuminates the surrounding room. Wires traced my body and trailed off the bed I was on, stretching out like webs to monitors and IV bags. I threw off the blanket and attempted to stand before I crashed onto the floor, my legs giving out under my weight. As I did, the screeching of alarms tore into my ears. The door flew open and in rushed two men dressed in pale blue uniforms. “Let the Alpha and Beta know she’s awake,” one called out as he helped me back into bed and fixed the wires around my arms. “How are you feeling, Miss Fairborn?” the nurse asked. I opened my mouth to answer but was only able to push out a dry cough, the effort scratching at my throat. “Here, sip this slowly,” the nurse said, handing me a small glass of ice water. My throat relaxed under the soothing chill of the drink, relieving my discomfort. “Thank you,” I said, finally able to answer his previous question, “I have a headache, other than that I feel fine, just confused. Why am I here?” “What’s the last thing you remember?” “I remember being called to the stage and not feeling well. After that there’s nothing.” “Well, according to Beta Fairborn, you passed out shortly after the ceremony and began seizing. You were then rushed here where we were able to stabilize you, but you have been in a coma.” “What? How long have I been in a coma?” “One month,” Carson said as he walked in. He had on his usual flannel pajama pants and graphic tee, this one with ACDC across his chest. It was clear he rushed straight down when the nurse told him, he hadn’t even bothered to brush down his scruffy bed head. His face lit up as he came over to give me a hug. “You really scared me there, Sis. I am so glad you are awake. How are you feeling?” “I’m okay, just a headache. I can’t believe I have been in a coma this whole time,” I said as he stepped back. “Where is everyone?” “Mom and Dad are on their way down. I sent a message to Zaria and Dylan, but it's two in the morning, so it might take some time before they get here.” We looked over at the nurse as he came up to me holding a small paper cup with a couple of little green pills. “These will help with the pain,” the nurse said. “Also, I need to know if you can communicate with your wolf.” I placed the pills on my tongue and filled my mouth with water before tossing my head back and swallowing it all. After, I closed my eyes and focused on trying to reach my wolf, Eden. My face scrunched up in pain as my head pulsed sharply. Looking up at the nurse, I shook my head. “Okay,” he sighed. “We are going to keep you for a couple more days. Since you have been in a coma, you will need help getting up and will likely need to use a wheelchair until you can reach your wolf to finish healing. Feel free to press the call button to your right if you need anything.” He bowed his head before turning to leave, closing the door behind him. “Carson, can you tell me more about what happened? All I remember is being called on stage, then nothing,” I said, looking down at my palms. He starts by telling me the same as the nurse had, adding that I had fallen on stage and went for fresh air while he gathered our things. “When I came looking for you, Dylan was running towards me saying that you were seizing him,” Carson said. “I dropped everything and followed him to you. I picked you up and rushed you to the car and took you to the pack hospital while Zaria sat in the back seat with you. I sent Dylan to grab our things.” “Did the doctors figure out what caused the seizure?” “No, by the time you got to the hospital you had stopped seizing, and your heart was failing. Once you were stable, they ran tests, but everything came back normal.” The door opened and a blur of my strawberry-blonde mother rushed across the room. She was dressed in a mint green gown and matching robe. Her hair was pulled back in a tight bun and had a few strands of hair loose at the front that tickled my cheek as she leaned over the bed and pulled me into her arms. “Oh, Honey, I am so happy you are okay,” Mom said. She held me by my shoulders at arm’s length, looking at me with tears in her eyes. “My little pup, we almost lost you.” “But we didn’t, Faye. That’s what matters,” Dad said as he placed his hand on my mother’s shoulder. His other hand came up and brushed my hair back before petting the top of my head. The corners of his eyes creased as he smiled down at me, relief painting his tired face. “It’s hard knowing so much time has passed,” I said, frowning, “I can’t wait to get out of this hospital and get back to normal.” “And you will, Dear,” my mother said, tilting my chin up. “Just in time for the ceremony in two weeks too.” “Ceremony?” “Yes, Zaria and Dylan’s mating ceremony. You kids have always been close. I know you would have been crushed to miss it.” “That’s wonderful,” I said as pain rolled down my chest, landing in my belly. The corners of my lips pinned themselves to my cheek bones, not quite reaching my eyes. The news should have made me excited, elated even. So why don’t I feel happy?
