Chapter 3: The Weight of a Name

629 Words
Lunchtime at Hanseong Elite High School was never loud — not because students were quiet, but because everyone knew when to speak and when to step aside. The cafeteria doors opened wide, revealing rows of polished tables and a private serving line reserved for the school’s most influential students. Conversations flowed easily, laughter rose and fell, and designer shoes clicked against the marble floor. Park Soo-jin entered with the rest of the students, tray in hand, eyes forward. She moved carefully, instinctively staying close to the walls. Lunch was not a break here — it was another battlefield. Then the atmosphere shifted. The chatter softened. Chairs slid back. A clear path formed down the center of the cafeteria. Kang Jae-hyun had arrived. Surrounded by subtle but unmistakable security, he walked in with calm, confident strides. His uniform was immaculate, his posture relaxed, his expression unreadable. He didn’t rush, didn’t glance around — he never needed to. People made space for him automatically, as if it were an unspoken rule written into the walls of the school itself. “Move,” someone whispered hurriedly. “Jae-hyun’s here.” Students stepped aside instinctively. Even those older than him straightened, careful not to block his way. Wealth spoke here — and his spoke the loudest. Oh Hye-rin sat up instantly, brushing imaginary dust from her skirt. Her eyes followed him openly now, admiration clear in her gaze. She leaned toward her friends, lips curving into a confident smile. “He’s late today,” she said softly. Around her, other girls pretended not to stare — failing badly. Some whispered his name, others adjusted their hair, all aware that he wasn’t just rich, but brilliant. Top of his class. Always calm. Always untouchable. Jae-hyun reached the serving counter. Staff members moved faster, straighter, their smiles polite and careful. He selected his meal without speaking much, nodding once in thanks before moving toward his usual table. Across the room, Park Soo-jin stood frozen for half a second, watching the silent choreography unfold. She had never seen anything like it — not respect earned, but respect enforced by power, wealth, and reputation. She quickly lowered her gaze and stepped aside, giving him space like everyone else. At another table near the windows, the school owner’s son, Lee Jun-seo, leaned back in his chair, watching the scene with amusement. His attention drifted briefly to a younger girl seated nearby — Kang Jae-hyun’s younger sister, laughing softly with her friends. Jun-seo smirked faintly. “Interesting family,” he murmured to himself. Lunch continued, but the balance of the room had already been decided. Kang Jae-hyun ate quietly, surrounded by influence. Oh Hye-rin watched him like something she already considered hers. Other girls whispered dreams. And Park Soo-jin finished her meal in silence, unaware that her world and his had just brushed against each other for the first time — not through words, but through the unmistakable weight of a name. Across the cafeteria, Oh Hye-rin’s gaze hardened slightly, her fingers tightening around her fork. In a place where influence decided everything, she was not used to competition — especially not when it came to someone she wanted. At another table, whispers spread quietly, names and rumors exchanged in low voices. Alliances shifted. Interests formed. Hanseong Elite High School never forgot faces, and it never forgave weakness. Park Soo-jin rose from her seat, tray in hand, moving carefully through the thinning crowd. She felt it then — not a look, not a word, but the pressure of being surrounded by power she didn’t yet understand. Outside, luxury cars idled patiently, security teams alert, waiting for heirs who ruled the present and would soon rule the future. Unseen by most, the lines of rivalry had already begun to form.
