Chapter 5: The New Top Student

777 Words
Park Soo-jin stepped into the classroom and moved toward the empty seat at the back. The room was already filled with students, some chatting quietly, others pretending to study. She lowered her gaze, clutching her bag tightly, and slid into her seat. The soft scrape of her chair against the floor drew a few glances, but no one said a word. The teacher, Mr. Choi, a tall man with sharp eyes and a calm demeanor, tapped his pen lightly against the desk. The classroom fell silent instantly. “Good morning, class,” he began. “Before we start today’s lesson, I want to acknowledge a new student among us — Park Soo-jin.” Several students turned their heads, curious. Whispers started low at first, growing louder as they spread across the rows. “Park Soo-jin,” Mr. Choi continued, “has transferred from a prestigious school in her home country. And I must say, her academic record is exceptional. She topped her former school in every subject.” A soft gasp ran through the classroom. Hye-rin’s eyes narrowed slightly, the subtle curl of her lips betraying both surprise and the tiniest hint of irritation. For years, she had enjoyed her position as the top student — praised by teachers, admired by peers, envied by many. Now, a new student had arrived, and already, the hierarchy seemed to be shifting. Murmurs spread like wildfire. “Did you hear that? She was the top of her entire school!” “No way. That’s insane…” “I wonder if she can maintain it here.” Even students who weren’t part of Hye-rin’s inner circle exchanged whispered calculations, speculating on how this newcomer would affect their own positions. Some were excited, some anxious, and a few, quietly envious. Soo-jin didn’t flinch. She opened her notebook and laid her pen carefully beside it, keeping her gaze down. She had learned early that in a place like Hanseong Elite High School, it wasn’t enough to be brilliant — you had to observe, adapt, and choose your moments wisely. Hye-rin leaned slightly toward her friends, whispering in a voice just loud enough for a few nearby students to hear. “Did you know she actually topped her previous school?” One friend nodded, whispering back, “Yeah, that’s why everyone’s talking about her. Even the seniors are curious.” Hye-rin’s fingers drummed lightly against her desk. She wasn’t angry — not yet. Curiosity and the faintest edge of challenge stirred within her. It wasn’t every day that someone arrived who could even begin to rival her in intelligence. Meanwhile, across the classroom, a few other students stole quick glances at Soo-jin, measuring her carefully. A scholarship student, unknown, modest in appearance — yet commanding attention in subtle ways simply because of her name on the teacher’s list and the announcement of her record. Mr. Choi cleared his throat, drawing everyone’s attention back. “I expect all students to welcome her and treat her as they would any member of this class. However,” he added, raising a finger slightly, “be prepared to meet someone who will challenge you academically. Park Soo-jin has proven that talent is not always tied to wealth or connections, but to hard work, intelligence, and dedication. Let her presence remind you why we study, why we aim high, and why we never stop striving.” A silence followed his words, but the students’ minds were already buzzing. Hye-rin’s expression hardened slightly. The game had begun, even if no one had said a word. Soo-jin finally looked up briefly, her eyes scanning the classroom without focusing on anyone. The whispers, the glances, the subtle measurements — she noticed everything. She didn’t need to respond. Her presence alone had shifted the room. Hye-rin caught that glance and felt a ripple of something she wasn’t used to: curiosity. And a small flicker of unease. For the first time in years, the golden girl who had ruled the academic rankings was confronted by someone who might surpass her — not through connections, not through influence, but sheer ability. By the end of the class, the gossip had already begun outside the room. Students left murmuring: who would top the next term? Would Hye-rin hold her place? Or would this quiet, composed scholarship student claim the highest honors? Park Soo-jin packed her things slowly, unbothered by the attention she had stirred. She had learned early in life that brilliance often drew eyes, but power was measured not by who noticed you first — it was about how you carried yourself when everyone was watching. And at Hanseong Elite High School, everyone was watching.
