“Sumedh, the way your business is carried out in the fields, I never thought you would be keeping such bombshells out of everyone’s eyes,” came a voice from my right. Everyone stopped talking and there was a pin drop silence. I looked up to see one of their cousins smirking at me.
Fields? What kind of business is carried out in fields? As in plain field?
Before father could respond, a voice boomed.
“HARSH”
Shiver ran down my spine when I heard Vansh’s voice. Until now, all I saw was his calm demure, he also carried a “I don’t care” attitude whenever we were around, except the first time we met near the entrance. But today, I see the true mafia that he is. His voice vibrated in our skin and for some reason I was scared for his cousin.
“What? I’m just stating the fact, look at his daughter. She’s fine as hell. Thinking of marrying her as well?” He continued gulping but not backing down. This guy has a death wish and what he said let that wish be fulfilled as soon as possible.
Why the hell would I marry this chimp? Is he good-looking? Sure. But enough for me to consider marrying? No. I don’t want to get married into a mafia family. I want to marry someone from a normal family, with normal moral values. But, I have no idea what the future has in store for me.
“Harsh, we have a policy that we don’t discuss business while the ladies are present,” came my father’s chauvinistic voice.
I tried to control myself from rolling my eyes.
“And for my second daughter, she will be getting married soon and I already have a perfect person in mind. At least, let my elder daughter get married first” My father stated, ending with a big laugh as if it was the most joyous thing he ever said. I felt everyone’s eyes on me.
I stared at my plate and gripping my fork strong enough to break it in half, but I know I don’t have enough strength.
Does he have someone in mind for me? Who is he? Have I met him?
I can bet on my life that he is some criminal with blood on his hands.
I tried to control my tears from falling but they filled my eyes quickly. I hate feeling so weak.
“Who is he?” Came a sharp voice from Vansh, I looked up to see him staring at me with a blank face.
My father chuckled before saying, ”Will reveal very soon” and changed the topic.
Quickly wiping my eyes before anyone could see, but I doubt it matters. I don’t really care much about these people.
I could feel Vansh’s eyes on me whenever he thought I was not noticing, but maybe I’m mistaking, he might be looking at my sister - his fiancée.
“And I’m really happy that we are working together on the new project, Vansh. You are in good hands, Ayra will manage the whole thing. If you have any issue feel free to contact her anytime and if you feel like work is not up to mark then let me know” by the end of father’s speech, he sent a look my way warning me if they are not happy with our work, I’ll take the brunt of it.
I sighed.
I sometimes wonder, why don’t I have suicidal tendencies? My situation is perfect for it.
“Enough with the boring work talk, let’s talk about wedding preparation,” My mother said in excitement and my sister shared the enthusiasm.
“Dad, I was thinking we needed to have an engagement party” My sister’s words made everyone look at her and Vansh, who looked like he would want to be anywhere but here.
“That’s actually a good idea. We can have all the important people from our line of work and the politicians here and have the ceremony. What say Vansh?” Father asked Vansh who was still staring at my sister.
Few moments passed and all he did was nod.
“Great! You both plan everything. Let’s have it in 2 weeks and you will have another 2 weeks to prepare for the wedding” father told my mother and sister. Both wanted to protest but father showed them his eyes shutting them up.
Planning an engagement party in 2 weeks and marriage in 4 weeks is suicide mission. All I could was control my chuckle. Suits them right.
All I pray is they will leave me alone.
“We need to have a meeting setup tomorrow regarding our resort project. Work needs to start before the wedding” Vansh spoke gritting his teeth. My father looked at me and all I could do was stare at my plate. Architects are still working at the sketch. They might be done by tomorrow, but I need to check with them. The work was in progress.
“Arya will visit your office tomorrow, right?” Came father’s sharp voice, eyes narrowed at me. I peeked at him and nodded.
I started texting our team about the upcoming meeting.
“My secretary will contact you” Vansh said looking at me and I just starred at him.
Why does he feel the need to involve my father in this issue? I told him that I’ll oversee this project. Couldn’t he just talk to me.
Vansh
Rest of the brunch was uneventful. My family was mingling with Sumedh’s family and Myra chose to chew my ears off. But my mind is imagining how tomorrow’s meeting will go. For some reason, I imagine this meeting alone with her and it unsettles me. Clearly, she is unaffected given that she doesn’t remember first time we met but to be fair, nothing happened except her weird moments so why is my head so hung up on this girl. Within 4 weeks, I’ll be married to her sister and she will become family. This is too f****d up for my liking.
After 5 hours, here we are in the basement with Harsh handcuffed to the chair.
“Oh come on, it was just a harmless comment” even with his lips split and bleeding, he couldn’t stop laughing. I wonder in what state of mind I was in when I took these brainless kids under my wing.
Vihaan stood at the corner still confused about what was happening and why I was doing this.
“She’s family. I don’t need any problem with Sumedh. Keep your words and hands to yourself. If today repeats or anything more, I’ll start with your fingers all the way upto your teeth” I said staring into his eyes, when he registered my threat he sobered up.
“Vansh, I didn’t mean any harm” He stuttered.
“I don’t care, stay the f**k away from her” I grit my words before slamming my fist through his nose, breaking it, stood up and walked out without another glance. All I heard was his agonized shout.
I entered my office and took my seat. Ignoring Vansh who followed me back, I switched on the computer.
“What was that?” He took a seat before me and sounded skeptical.
“You were there,” that’s all I said.
“Bhai(Bro), you just plummeted his face and broke his nose for just one comment, that too it was not directed towards your finacée. He has done much more than that and you have never cared.” His suspicion was strong.
“I don’t want any beef with Sumedh, you know if not stopped how Harsh gets,” I said concentrating on the computer but my ears keep ringing.
“Bhai, are you sure everything’s fine? You are acting a bit weird” He said crunching his eyebrows together.
“Everything’s good. Get back to work” Even though he is hurt by my dismissal, he doesn’t say anything. Just nodded and walked out.
I sat there cracking my knuckles. I’m getting out of hand. Not sure why I’m doing this. I don’t even know that girl properly. For some reason I can’t stop thinking about her. I worry once I get to know her I’ll be unstoppable, but there’s also hope. What if she is shallow just like her sister? And has an awful personality which is off-putting. I really hope so.
Tomorrow’s meeting will determine my fate.
