I awoke to the sound of my alarm going off. I rolled towards it and shut the alarm off; 8am. I slowly sat up in my bed, yawned, and rubbed my eyes to rid the tiredness I still felt. I slip into my slippers at the side of my bed and stood up to walk to Nathan's room. I open the door quietly and sit down beside him, gently shaking his still body.
"Nathan, time to get ready for school," I sleepily said.
"Can I please skip today?" He asked, pleading as best he could.
"Get up and get ready please," I walked towards his door, turning the light on as I left the room.
I went back to my room to get ready myself. Sorting through my closet I picked out a pair of grey sweatpants and a matching zip-up sweater. I can still hear Phillip snoring on the couch and the static of the tv. I quickly change and run out to the kitchen to start packing Nathan and I's lunch.
"Leia! I can't find my socks!" I hear Nathan call out.
"They're at the end of your bed, if not check under your bed!" I call back.
I set two bowls on the dining room table and poured some fruit loops into them. I grab the milk from the fridge as Nathan runs out of his room and takes a seat at the table. I pour our milk then place a spoon in each bowl, sliding his bowl to him before taking my own seat.
"You better go to all of your classes today I'm not joking Nathan." I scold.
He had been skipping a couple classes, his principal kept calling me to let me know.
"I know, I know!"
When we're both finished with our bowls I grab them from the table and quickly wash them in the sink before tossing him his backpack and leading him out the front door, taking Phillips keys to the car on my way out.
"I call shotgun," Nathan says eagerly.
"Well you sure as hell aren't driving so obviously you'd be in the passenger seat Nathan," I laugh.
The drive was only about 15 minutes to get him to school. I pull up in the school bus loading zone as there weren't any busses there.
"I meant what I said this morning," I warn.
"Yeah, yeah. I'll see you after school." He says as he steps out of the car, slamming the door behind him.
I honk a few times to get his attention and wave at him before driving off to get to my school on time. A call comes through the Bluetooth in the car and I answer it.
"Hello?" I answer.
"LEIA WHERE ARE YOU?!" Jaclyn's voice booms through the speakers, making me turn down the overall volume.
"I'm on my way Jaclyn! I just dropped Nathan off at school."
"Girl you're lateeee," she huffs.
"Sorry, we slept in a bit. It was a long night last night."
"Alright well text me when you get here! I'll be in class, the principals behind me right now," she says hurriedly in a hushed tone before the call ends.
I start speeding a little bit to hurry up a bit, besides if I get caught on street cameras it's not my car, it's Phillips. I end up in my school's parking lot, looking for a spot. I find one spot between a nice 1967 Mustang GT500, and a run down Volkswagen Beetle.
"f**k!" I mumble looking at the cars clock, 20 minutes late.
I rush out of the car and run for the schools front door, texting Jaclyn whilst I do so.
* Jaclyn *
I'm here!!!!!!!
8:50AM

As I enter the school she comes running at me.
"Girl you are 20 minutes late! Ms. McDermid has been asking me when you are coming!" Jaclyn says.
"Probably, but I need to stop by the office first."
Jaclyn and I walk to the office together chatting about little things.
"What're you here for?" Asks the lady at the front desk.
"I need a late slip."
"And why are you late Ms. Smith?"
I hate when they call me by my last name. I hate sharing a last name with him.
"I overslept," I half-heartedly meant it.
"Third time this week?" She asks, peering at me through the top gap of her glasses.
"Yep."
The little printer machine prints my late slip, I grab it and Jaclyn and I head to class.
*Knock knock*
I knock on the class door, drawing all the classes attention to me. That's when I remember I didn't brush my hair so it probably looks disastrous right now. I pull my good over my hair.
"I'm sorry I'm late Ms. McDermid," I apologize as I hand her my late slip, Jaclyn trailing in behind me.
We both walk to her backpack that's already on her desk and I take a seat in the chair beside hers.
"So what happened last night?" She asked.
I knew she'd ask me what happened. I just hoped it wouldn't be as soon as she seen me.
"Just more s**t with Phillip," I roll my eyes.
"Well you know you can always come to my house if things get too much."
"I can't leave Nathan alone with him. I know he doesn't hurt him or anything but I can't risk the opportunity of it happening."
She nods, completely understanding where I'm coming from.
