[Melvin]
The gentle cool embrace of the cold breeze that swept into my room, made my skin tingle.
I shut my eyes and let the breeze sweep my hair in whatever direction it wanted to. I let out a sigh and although I had no idea why, I felt so uneasy. Something just did not seem right.
“Hey son!” Mother’s voice suddenly brought me out of my reverie. I had been lost in my thoughts and I spun around quickly to look at her.
As usual, she had a smile etched to her face as she opened the door ajar and stood there. Okay, that was new? Her lips curved into a wider smile and with each step she took further, the nudge in my spirit intensified.
“Mother!” I opened my arms wide as I walked to meet her as well and pulled her into a warm embrace, pushing aside the thoughts of the unease I felt. “Shouldn’t you be asleep? Tomorrow is such a great day, isn’t it?” She questioned..
“Of course, it is and I am super excited. I just wanted to make sure you are just as fine” She placed a kiss on my forehead and I giggled.
Twenty years down the line and I was still mother's baby. “I wish it was you” Mother suddenly spoke and the smile on her face began to dissipate.
Although I knew what she was talking about, I pretended not to and arched my brows. I wasn’t going to give myself away that quickly.
“What do you mean, mother?” I questioned her as I looked down at her.
Mother could be mistaken for my sister or my woman. She didn’t seem to age at all.
“I wish you would be crowned Alpha tomorrow and not Marcus. Marcus does not deserve the title and you know that. His frivolous and stupid attitude would only cause our lands to be in ruins!” She lamented.
I could see the sadness embedded in mother’s eyes as she spoke.
“Your father does not seem to see this. He insists on making him Alpha because he is the first son.
Marcus would only ruin our reputation. He would waste the funds on drinks and parties” She let out a sigh and sat on my bed.
I knew she had suddenly become weak and I hated to see her hurt.
“Be calm, mother. I know your fears and I understand it well. You have to trust father.
If he finds Marcus worthy of being the Alpha, then he would definitely have his reasons.
You can try to talk to him. He is your son and….”
I brought my speech to an halt. Of course, mother had tried to make him change and act like the son of an Alpha ever since we were little but Marcus only grew worse.
“Everything will be fine, mother. Just relax” I assured her with a smile on my face as I was aware that that was what she needed at that minute.
If I didn’t give her such level of assurance, she would still be worried.
Mother let out a sigh and curved my face in her palms.
“You should have been my first child instead of Marcus.” Her voice was laced with sadness and hurt.
“You have me still.” I responded and hugged her tightly.
That was all she needed at that time. Assurance. Father was way too busy to be able to give her such. I was her only option. “You have to return to your room now and be fine, okay?”
Like a little child, mother nodded and then, I led her to her room. Even though I tried to act like mother was pretending, I knew she was right.
Marcus had always been the bad egg that existed since we were so little.
Unlike me, Marcus was skilled in nothing positive.
His fighting skills is way too bad and even though Father had tried to teach him how to fight, he always ended up giving a woeful performance.
He was however skilled in hosting parties and having fun.
Of course, he was my elder brother and he deserved to indeed be the Alpha as the heir, his strength spoke otherwise.
He wasn’t capable in any sense and I on the other hand was concerned about the well being of the pack.
I headed to father's study room as I knew that was exactly where he would be and of course, I was right.
Despite being so old and ready to hand over the baton of leadership to his first son, Father did not hesitate to read always like his life depended on it. I was slowly following in his footsteps as well.
“Good night, Father” I bowed and he urged me to join him.
“Unfortunately, I am not here to join you to read tonight, father as I still have some inspection to do.
I just wanted to speak to you about something very important” I informed him. Father arched his brows as he looked up at me.
“Father, I know Marcus is the first child and is of course, my older brother but I am concerned about the welfare and affair of the pack.
We both know Marcus isn’t capable of ruling his own life. How then can you hand over such responsibility to him?
The pack would be in ruins in a matter of days. ” I explained, trying as much as I could to convince father but he chuckled and looked up at him.
“Who then do you find worthy of being the Alpha?” He questioned. I was quiet for a while.
“I really do not know, father. I am not saying this because I want to be the Alpha or anything of such nature but I am more capable than he is.
I am skilled in sword fighting, I am skilled in archery, I am skilled in fist fighting, I monitor and inspect the guards. I do a lot of things that I will not find difficult when I become the Alpha.
Marcus isn’t capable of any of this” I tried to make father understand my point but instead, he chuckled.
Father picked up his cup and took a sip from his tea. His reading ritual wasn’t complete without a ginger tea.
“You should go to bed now, son. Tomorrow is going to be a big day and you should be prepared. ” Father advised.
I was flushed with embarrassment as I bowed and left the study. I decided to go for the final round check for the night before going to bed.
Although they were not so audible, I could hear the guards argue with someone.
“What is going on here?” I questioned.
“We caught a spy!” One of them yelled. My brows furrowed immediately.
I hated it so much when spies tries to come into our pack. I suddenly heard a loud thud… on the floor.
