CHAPTER THREEViola did not say a word during dinner about her discovery and matters were not helped by the fact that, once or twice, she caught her uncle staring at her with a strange look on his face. Immediately that dinner had finished, she made her excuses, saying that she was fatigued and retired to her room. She felt incredibly tempted to open up the cupboard again, but she did not. Instead, she allowed Mirupa to retire for the night and put herself to bed. Although exhausted from her long journey, she still found it difficult to sleep. ‘I cannot believe that I am here,’ she said to herself, as the sounds of the unfamiliar Indian night wafted into the room. ‘And that photograph of Mama.
