CHAPTER 18: SAVE THE WORLD
The walls were dissolving.
Not crumbling. Pixelating.
Like the world was made of sand and someone was erasing it.
"Damian!" I grabbed his hand. "What’s happening?"
"The Game Master," Serena said, backing up. "He’s deleting the code.
When the world is gone, we’re gone."
Damian looked at me. Then at the ceiling. At the flickering sky.
And he did the last thing I expected.
He laughed.
"What’s funny?" I snapped.
"You," he said. "You’re scared. And pissed. And beautiful.
Even when the world is ending."
He pulled me to him. Forehead to forehead.
The gold marks on our necks burned bright.
"I don’t care if we’re code," he whispered. "I don’t care if someone wrote us.
I chose you. In every version. In every world.
And I’ll choose you in this one too."
The bond pulsed.
And for a second, the pixelation stopped.
Serena gasped. "The bond... it’s fighting the deletion."
"What?" I asked.
"The Blood Bond is old magic," she said fast. "Older than the Game.
It’s not code. It’s real. And real things can’t be deleted easily."
Damian’s eyes met mine. Silver and certain.
"Then we use it."
He lifted my hand. Pressed it to his chest. Over his heart.
Over the gold mark.
"Feel me," he said. "In your head. In your soul.
If this world is ending, then we write a new one."
*Together?* I thought to him.
*Together,* he answered. *Always.*
The ground shook again.
A voice boomed from everywhere. Cold. Mechanical.
`[Game Master: "Bond detected. Anomaly. Initiating reset."]`
The sky tore open.
And through it I saw it.
The desk. The laptop.
Fingers hovering over the `DELETE` key.
With my name under it. `ELENA_VALE`
"No!" I screamed. Not at the Game Master. At the person typing.
"That’s not you," Damian said, reading me. "But we can reach them."
"How?" Serena asked.
Damian looked at me. "The bond. It’s a bridge.
If we push everything we have into it... love, pain, memory...
Maybe the author on the other side will feel it."
"You want me to make a real person cry?" I whispered.
"I want you to make them remember why they started writing us," he said.
I closed my eyes.
I thought of chapter 1. Me on the floor. Rejected.
I thought of chapter 7. The library floor. His jacket over me.
I thought of chapter 14. His "Can I kiss you?"
I thought of chapter 16. "Run with me."
And I pushed it all.
Through the gold. Through the bond. Through the screen.
Above us, the fingers paused over DELETE.
A new line of text appeared in the sky:
`[Game Master: "..."]`
Then:
`[Game Master: "Damn it."]`
The pixelation stopped.
The world stabilized.
Serena collapsed to her knees. "It worked. He stopped."
The voice came again. But different. Tired. Human.
`[Game Master: "You weren’t supposed to do that. Characters aren’t supposed to fight back."]`
Damian pulled me tighter. "We’re not just characters.
We’re mates."
Silence.
Then the sky rewrote itself.
`[Game Master: "Fine. You win this round. But the game isn’t over.
New rules. If you want to live, you have to play.
Chapter 19 starts now."]`
The prison vanished.
We were standing in a field.
Under a real sun.
With real grass.
And in front of us: A door.
Glowing. With writing on it.
`CHAPTER 19: THE GAME BEGINS`
Damian looked at me. "Ready?"
I squeezed his hand. "With you? Always."
We stepped through.
