Vivian
Once again, we were in the training room. This time we had no idea what the mission would be, up until an hour before the test.
Once again, my heart was beating a bit too fast for my own liking.
Once again, my hopes were set on the silver-haired fox, to help us win this one.
I was standing right next to Lucien as Mathew and his team of selected nobles came in, followed by the trainer that was in charge of this test. Seeing them walk in made the already tense situation even more intense.
Mathew stood in front of his team like the proud leader that he was with a smirk on his face that told us that he was ready to tear each and every person in this room to peace. His wolf-like eyes took in each of the members of my team, but he paid none of them any attention. He dismissed all of them as if they did not matter to him. But his eyes did linger on one person... on me.
Everything in me screamed that he had picked his target for today and, to no one's surprise, he picked me as his target... great...
Lucien next to me stirred a little, clearly disliking the other hybrids' eyes lingering on me for so long. I could sense the tension radiating from him as he looked almost ready to fight the wolf hybrid if he made even the slightest move in my direction.
"Okay, today's task is to protect your base while taking the other teams' base at the same time. Each of you will have sensors attached to you that will let us know if you get hit by one of these."
He lifted a laser gun.
"If you get hit, you are out. If the whole team is out, then you lose. It's a pretty simple context. Are there any questions?"
No one said a thing. I felt all five of them stare at me with such intensity that it made it hard to breathe for me.
"Okay, so you have an hour to strategize."
We all nodded, and the other team walked out of the room following the trainer.
Silence lingered in the room after the others had left one by one. The sound of footsteps was the only thing you could hear. As we waited for the doors to close, after the sound of the heavy metal closing the door vibrated through the air, it snapped us out of the tension-filled silence, and we all turned to each other.
"Okay... so what's the plan?"
Rebecca was the first to break the heavy silence and everyone's eyes turned to Lucien with silent hope in their eyes.
"Okay, what do we know about them? Other than the fact that they are all too cocky for their own good?"
"They have a reason to be cocky, they are the Nobels."
Kevin said in a tone that made it sound like he was explaining something obvious to Lucien, but Lucien just looked confused.
"Nobels?"
"Yeah, as in the richest and most powerful, talented hybrids in the academy."
Rebecca explained, but Lucien still looked confused, his eyes turned to me with hope that I would explain it all to him.
"They are rich and very powerful. They all have very high-class animals and their power levels are at the top of the class. They are believed to be the next most powerful hybrids to lead Alpha in the future."
I tried to explain it to him.
"So you all know about them? That gives us an advantage. Now we only need a strategy."
Lucien spoke in a slow, self-assured tone.
My mind started to rise as I raised my hand and drew everyone's attention to me.
"I... I think I have an idea how to beat them..."
***
Slowly I made my way toward the nobles' camp. My heart was beating so fast and so loud that I could barely hear myself think.
Carefully, I walked close to the campsite and chose a comfortable position that suited me well, and I concentrated on one of the boys guarding the base. My hands shook a little as I pointed my gun at him and pressed the trigger. The light on his vest died, indicating that he had died.
Happy with myself, I was ready to pull back when I felt someone behind me.
"Well, look who we have here? A little stray wolf?"
A shiver ran down my back as I froze in place. My fingers shook as they wrapped around the gun in my hands.
Will I be able to take all others out... Will I be able to take him out?
But before I could do anything, the hand on my gun stopped me from moving.
"Well, lower this, we don't need to have an accident, do we? You already took out Logan, but I guess it's his fault for standing right here in the open and not noticing you."
I swallowed hard as I listened to the calm, mocking tone of Matthew's voice. Before I coud even say anything he continued.
"What are you doing here all alone, Vivian? Where is the rest of your looser team?"
I swallowed hard and did not answer him, not that I needed to. He was ready to answer for himself.
"Are they hiding while you do all the heavy work? Was that how you won the last test? When I saw them all, I knew that none of them were a match for you."
He stepped closer as he pulled my laser gun out of my hands.
"They are just dead weights dragging you down. Do you already regret not picking us?"
I could no longer hold it in. Slowly, I turned around and met him face to face.
"No, I don't, and they are not dead weight."
My calm tone made Mathew chuckle.
"Aron, did you hear her?"
He turned to where one of his pals was supposed to stand, but there was no one there... Actually, there was no one else other than the two of us standing there.
"ARON?'
Confused, he looked around, searching for the rest of his team, but there was none else here... just the two of us... well there, as far as he knew.
"Sorry, your friend is unavailable."
I said, enjoying this little moment far too much.
"What? Where are they?"
"Well..."
He started taking a step in my direction as he lifted his laser gun and pointed it right at me.
"Well, as you can see, he is not here."
"What did you do?"
He said, clearly looking very distressed by the situation.
"I? I did not do anything. You were right next to me the whole time I was here."
The fake innocent look on my face was not really fooling him.
"Vivian, stop f*****g with me and tell me where is my team, before I shoot you."
With a bit more confidence, I took a step forward, getting closer to him.
"As I said, I had no idea, I was right here with you the whole time."
My words pushed one too many of his buttons and he started to lose it.
"You freaking crazy bitch..."
He said while taking a step closer to me, but he was stopped by a hand on his neck.
"What did you call her?"
"What..."
Shocked by the sudden appearance of a hand on his neck and a laser gun pressed into his side.
"What did you call Vivian?"
The more serious and intense tone in Lucien's voice forced Mathew to swallow.
"I... I..."
"What did you call her?"
This time there was no ignoring the icy request from the fox hybrid.
"WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?"
"Vivian's mate, now care to repeat what you called her, before I take the ability of speech from you?"
Did he call me his mate in public again?
How many times will we have to have this conversation?
The hand on Matthew's throat tightened.
"HOW DID YOU CALL MY MATE?"
There was a clear threat and a dare in Lucien's voice as he dragged Mathew closer to his chest, but the other man was still frozen in fear.
As they were both still too concerned about each other, I lifted my laser gun and pointed it at Mathews' chest, taking him out and ending this mission test.
The loud signal filled the room, signaling all of us that the mission was complete. Lucien released Mathew and he immediately turned around to stare at the man in front of him. Matthew's eyes narrowed in on Lucien's face as he whispered...
"Do I know you?"
