The elevator whispered closed behind Sayuri. She let out a long breath she hadn’t known she was holding.
The first day was over. But her mission was just beginning.
As the sleek black doors carried her down through the floors of power, her mind raced.
He is not what I expected.
Rin Takeda had been calm. Polite. But behind his gaze, something darker stirred — something that had both frightened her and drawn her in.
And when he had looked at her wrist — for a moment, she had seen recognition.
Why?
What does he know?
The elevator chimed. She stepped out into the cool Tokyo night.

A watching shadow
Unseen by her, a man in a dark coat leaned against a nearby wall, eyes tracking her every move.
He spoke softly into a tiny mic beneath his collar.
“She is alone. Leaving now.”
Far above, Rin stood at his window, watching too.
"Follow her," Rin ordered quietly into his phone. "But do not be seen. No harm is to come to her."
He stared into the night, his fists tight at his sides.
Mine to protect, he reminded himself. Even from the shadows.

Sayuri’s apartment
Her small apartment in Shinjuku was nothing like the cold perfection of the Takeda Tower. It was warm, lived-in — books stacked neatly, small plants by the window, a soft throw blanket draped across the couch.
But tonight it felt less like a home, more like a cell.
Sayuri sat on her bed, legs drawn up, laptop open before her. The screen showed a grainy photo — her brother, Kenji, laughing with a group of men. One of them was Rin.
She traced the image with her fingertip.
What happened to you, oniisan?
Why did they take you from me?
A soft chime broke the silence. Her phone lit up.
Yuji: I’m outside. Let me in.
Sayuri hesitated. Part of her wanted to be alone — to think. But she couldn’t afford to raise Yuji’s suspicions. He had connections she needed to uncover.
And yet... why does seeing him make me feel colder now?
She rose and opened the door.

Yuji Nakahara
Yuji was handsome in a sharp-edged way — all tailored suits and easy charm. But there was something in his eyes now that unsettled her.
He leaned in, kissing her cheek. His hands lingered too long on her waist.
“You look tired, love,” he said smoothly. "Long first day?"
Sayuri forced a small smile. “Very."
“And the big boss? As terrifying as they say?”
She shrugged lightly. “Professional. Polite. That’s all."
Yuji’s gaze sharpened for a moment. Then the mask returned.
“Good," he said softly. "Stay careful. Men like Rin Takeda... they play by their own rules."
Sayuri met his gaze evenly.
And so do I.

Rin’s protection
Across the street, in a parked car, one of Rin’s men watched the apartment.
“She’s inside with the boyfriend," the man reported.
Rin’s voice came cold through the line.
"Stay there. Do not interfere — unless she is threatened."
He ended the call and stood in the dark of his vast office, jaw tight.
You do not belong to him, he thought fiercely. And I will not lose you, Sayuri. Not again.

Hana’s worry
Meanwhile, Hana Ishikawa sat alone in her own office, sipping tea, files spread before her.
Her sharp mind turned over what she had seen.
He is already drawn to her, she thought grimly. And she... she has secrets of her own.
Her fingers tapped softly on the table.
If they are not careful... they will both be destroyed.

The four shadows
In an old warehouse at the edge of the city, the four men met in secret.
“She draws him out,” the leader said. "Just as we hoped."
"And the girl?" another asked.
"A pawn," the leader sneered. "For now."
"But soon," he added, eyes gleaming, "the promise will be broken — and the dragon will fall."
They raised glasses in the dark.
Soon.

Back at Sayuri’s apartment — late night
Yuji had left hours ago. The apartment was silent again.
Sayuri stood by the window, staring out at the glittering sprawl of Tokyo.
I will find the truth, she vowed. Even if it destroys me.
And deep in the shadows below, unseen eyes still watched.
