Chapter 3

Amethyst's POV I hurriedly made my way back to the room where the woman was waiting, my footsteps echoing in the quiet hallway. As I reached the doorway, I took a deep breath before stepping inside to inform that seamstress that I had to leave because of personal reasons "Madam, there was an emergency, so I need to leave immediately. I'll be sure to check back again soon," I informed the woman, trying to keep my voice steady despite my urgency. The seamstress nodded in understanding, her expression calm yet with a hint of concern on her face. "That's fine, Ms. Wright. We can reschedule today's agenda. Knowing you, you wouldn't step out with a good reason. On that note, I shall see you again soon, Miss Wright. Please take care" she responded kindly. I mustered a small smile, grateful for her understanding, and waved goodbye before quickly turning on my heel and rushing out of the room. As soon as I stepped outside, I quickened my pace, almost running towards my car. The moment I got in, I pulled the door shut, inserted the key into the ignition, and started the engine. Without hesitation, I pressed down on the accelerator and drove off, the urgency of the situation weighing heavily on me. My speed easily reached 70 miles per hour despite the legal speed limit being nowhere near that. If I got caught speeding, that's another problem for another day. Right now, all I care about is reaching the airport to get to my little sister. Reaching for my AirPods, I placed them in my ears and immediately dialed Amara's number again, hoping she would pick up quickly. The call connected within seconds. "Amy," her voice came through, sounding small and fragile. "Hey, Ara. I'm driving to you now, okay? You can talk to me while I'm on my way there so I know you're doing fine. I'm trying to get to you as fast as I can so you don't have to be scared for much longer, okay? I'm coming, Amara. I'm coming" I said softly, trying my best to reassure her. "Okay, Amy," she responded with a sniff and as her voice wavered slightly. "How are you feeling, bub? You can talk to me. Tell me what you're feeling" I asked, concern lacing my words. "Drained. I feel drained, Amy," she admitted. And then, I heard it. The sound of her quiet sobs. My heart clenched. That wasn’t a very good question, was it? How stupid of me. Of course she wasn't okay. It's obvious she's not okay. "Take calming breaths, bub. Take calming breaths. Breathe, bub. Breathe" I reminded her gently, hoping she would listen to me. I could hear her following my advice, inhaling deeply and then exhaling slowly. "That's right. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. You're doing great, Ara. You're doing great. It's going to br okay. You're gonna be okay." I encouraged her, trying to soothe her in any way I could. She continued her breathing exercises as I kept my focus on the road, pushing more than the speed limit but also careful enough to get to the airport as fast as possible but without getting myself into an accident. Throughout the drive, I kept talking to her, keeping her engaged, reminding her that she was okay, that I was coming, and that everything would be fine. It was the only thing I could do at the moment while I made my way to her. After what felt like an eternity but was only about a twenty-minute drive, I finally arrived at the airport. "Okay, Ara, I'm here now," I told her, quickly parking the car and stepping out. My eyes immediately scanned the area, searching for my little sister. "Amy!" a familiar voice called out. I turned toward the sound of the familiar voice and immediately spotted Amara running towards me. "Ara," I breathed in relief as she reached me, throwing herself into my arms. I wrapped my arms around her tightly, holding her close as she started to sob uncontrollably into my shoulder. Gently, I caressed her back, letting her cry it out. I didn’t know exactly what was going on, but if it had anything to do with home, I knew it couldn’t be good. Nothing good happens at home especially if it involves our parents. And that was based on experience. "Shh, it's okay. I'm here now, Ara. I'm here now. Your big sister is here now," I cooed softly, my voice laced with reassurance. She responded by tightening her hold around me slightly. "I'm so scared, Amy," she whimpered. I held her tighter, continuing to rub her back soothingly. "I know, bub. I know. But you're not alone. I'm here, okay?" I assured her. Amara nodded slightly as she continued to hug me. Once she calmed down a little, we gathered her things. I loaded her luggage into the car while she got into the passenger seat. After making sure everything was settled, I got into the driver's seat, buckled up, and started the car so we can go. "Do you want to grab something to eat?" I asked, noticing how she clutched her stomach. She nodded without hesitation. "McDonald's." She said. I chuckled. "McDonald's it is." I agreed. Just as we pulled into the drive-thru, my phone rang. Without looking at the caller ID, I picked it up. "Hello?" I answered the call. "Miss Wright, this is Alice. I just wanted to let you know that I'm getting off work now." "Okay, Alice. Thank you for your hard work today," I said sincerely. "You're welcome, Miss Wright. I'll see you again tomorrow." With that, the call ended. I glanced over at Amara. She was staring out the window, lost in her thoughts. "Ara," I called softly. No response. I tried again. "Ara." I called out again Still nothing. "Amara," I called out firmly this time. She finally turned to look at me. I gave her a concerned look. "Does Ady know that you're coming here to New York?" I asked her She shook her head. "No. No one knows I'm here except you," she admitted in a barely audible whisper. I sighed. This had never happened before. But maybe it was about time she ran away from home. I can't blame her. That household has always been extremely toxic to be in. After all, I had done the same when I was eighteen. I ran away because I could no longer stomach my parents' manipulation and controlling. But Amara wasn’t like me. She was different. She was the purest of the three of us. Even though she was only three years younger than me, we still treated her like a baby. She was, after all, the youngest. "We'll need to call Ady and tell him later that you're with me, okay? We can’t lie or keep this a secret from him," I told her. I watched as fear spread across her face. I reached out and held her hand to comfort her. "He won’t tell, Ara. Ady would never do that. Especially not to us. We just need to assure him that you're safe. That's all" I said gently. She took a deep, calming breath before nodding. We got our food and headed back to my place. Amara devoured her meal while I sipped on my iced coffee. Once we arrived, I told her to head inside first while I got her stuff from the car. I met her by the elevator, and together, we made our way up to my apartment. "Go ahead, wash up, and rest. I'm sure it was a long flight. I'll call Ady while I get you settled in, so just relax, okay?" She nodded. "Thank you, Amy. You're honestly the best big sister in the whole entire universe. I'm glad I'm your little sister" she said and gave me a quick squeeze. I chuckled. "I know." I kid. I really do wish that was true but I know it's not. I have been absent for a while because of my issues with my parents as well as with how busy I am with work. I try my best, I do. But I am nothing close to being the perfect sister. Not to Amara and not to Adrian. Once Ara was inside, I handed her a towel from when she and Ady used to visit. I keep essentials for them in my place just in case. I don't necessarily welcome guests at my place often. It's mostly just Celine and my siblings. I like to keep my private space to myself. "Go take a relaxing shower while I sort out your things and call Ady to let him know that you're safe with me" I told her "Okay, Amy. Thank you," she said, giving me a quick peck on the cheek before disappearing into the bathroom to freshen up. I opened her luggage to help her settle in my place while I started dialing Adrian’s number. Adrian picked up almost immediately. "Hello, Amy?" "Hey, Ady. Ara is with me. She arrived not too long ago and we're now at my place. She’s safe. She is not in the best state but she's safe with me still so don’t worry. Just don’t tell our parents. You know how they can be" I informed him. "Thank God. Did she say why she left?" "Not yet. She was an emotional wreck when I picked her up. I haven't seen her this way in a long while. I'm assuming it has something to do with back home" I said. He sighed. "Was it bad?" "Very. I’ve only seen her cry this much when I left home five years ago." I told him. He was silent for a moment. "Maybe it's because of the engagement." I shut my eyes in frustration. That. "Ahh yes. That bs" I sighed. Adrian sighed from the other line. "Yeah" I just continued what I was doing as I had Adrian on call then, as I unpacked, something small fell. I picked it up and unwrapped it. My breath hitched for a moment. I gulped as my jaw tightened. "Hey, Ady? I'll call you back, okay? I just.... something came up" I said trying to be as caln as I can. "Okay. Try to update me on Amara as much as you can please?" "Uhm yeah sure, I'll try. Bye, Ady" I said and hang up the phone. Amara walked in and saw my hand. The one with the positive pregnancy test. Her eyes widened. "You're pregnant?" I whispered in shock and confusion.
