Svetlana
I opened my eyes slowly to find myself at the infirmary. Zina rushed to my side immediately as she grabbed my hand and I flashed her a smile.
“How do you feel now, dear?” She demanded and I flashed her a small smile.
“Much better… Thank you so much.” I whispered and she smiled.
“You shouldn’t thank me alone, I only did my job as a healer.” She replied and I didn’t understand her words but I said nothing.
My tummy still hurt faintly, it was much better than before and all I could wonder was why anyone would want me dead.
I was a slave, the lowest rank with everyone towering over me, what was so special about me that was worth being killed for?
“You don’t need to think hard about it, it’s predictable, deaths occur in the palace frequently.” She tried to console me but it only made me more furious.
“I knew it occurs between the ruling families but I’m a mere slave, a human for that matter who is hated by everyone, why would anyone want me dead? I’ve done nothing but follow every instruction they give, this is unfair.” I replied and she smiled faintly.
“I’ll tell you a little story… This kingdom was never always like this… the humans didn’t just attack on any random day, trust was broken, a Lycan betrayed her own, she did what she wasn’t supposed to do. Rather than be on guard, she believed the humans loved her… That they loved her until the night they struck. They used her weakness against her world, destroying everything. The peace the world now seeks, was destroyed because of her.” She narrated and a part of me couldn’t help but wonder if it was her.
If she was behind it, there was no way she’d turn back to this kingdom without getting locked up.
“Are you that woman?” I asked cautiously and she smiled, shaking her head.
“No, she was my twin, the Lycan who loved a human.” She replied with a sad smile and I patted her hand softly.
“I’m so sorry such a thing happened to you… That’s sad.” I whispered and she shrugged.
I glanced out, there was a loud howl and she inhaled softly. “The beast… Do you need me to give you anything? There’s no telling when they’ll come to take you away from him.” She muttered with sadness and I shook my head.
I wasn’t all that sad, considering the fact that he saved me. It wasn’t like I equaled it to all the crazy things he’s done to me over the past weeks but a part of me was at ease, knowing he came for me… That he would always come to me whenever I’m in danger.
“I’m fine, thank you so much Zina… my love would’ve been hell without you.” She sniffed, moved to tears as she hugged me tightly.
“I already informed the guards that you would be spending the night here, I’ll get you dinner.” She offered and I sat up, ready to follow her but she stopped me.
“You don’t have to follow me, just sit back, this isn’t the palace.” She teased and I chuckled, insisting vehemently.
“You’re always pampering me like a child, I must help this time.” I replied and she nodded.
We walked into her kitchen together, the meals were half way done and I was helping her bring out the dishes when I felt a sudden jolt inside me.
I paused, unable to react or understand what had just happened.
My heart began to pound heavily and I felt something strange on my right chest, like there was a second heart in there.
I swallowed, trying to push away the feeling but it persisted.
I felt my legs move, I slithered out of the kitchen against my wish while Zina called out to me.
I broke into a run, dashing out of her garden into the wild. It was dark but strangely, I could see where I was heading to.
My vision was so clear, it amazed me. My heartbeat raced, I felt goosebumps all over me as a sudden longing filled me.
I couldn’t describe what I was feeling but it was strange, beautiful in a crazy way, like something was blossoming inside of me.
I had never run this fast before, passing trees while moving deeper into the forest, damning the fact that I could be devoured by any random creature.
I should be exhausted but my strength increased as time went, a sweet feeling rested on my chest, pure, raw joy that I couldn’t explain why.
I looked forward to seeing someone, I felt empty and the joy stemmed from the fact that I was about to see someone.
I still couldn’t explain what it was but abruptly, everything disappeared, the feelings, the sight and my strength.
I collapsed on the ground, groaning softly as my whole body went rigid with exhaustion, my legs hurt from running too much and I shivered as the cold hit me.
I was wearing my tiny clothing, only god knew how I’d make it back to the palace, the road was unknown to me, I couldn’t tell where I was coming from and just as I was about to give us, I heard noise coming from behind me.
“Svetlana.” I heard a familiar voice call and I turned around immediately, breathing heavily as I turned into Zina’s arms.
“Thank you so much… you’re a life saver. Thank you so much.” I whispered, holding on tightly like she was going to disappear the moment I let go.
She patted my back, letting my body go calm before she pulled away.
“What happened? Why did I suddenly run out of the house? Am I going insane or what?” I asked with concern as she led me out.
She was walking ahead of me, her hand tightly wound around mine.
“If I’m not mistaken, what you felt is a mate bond. Lycans and werewolves feel such when they find their mates…”
“What… That’s impossible. I’m a human.” I protested and she shrugged.
“Honestly there’s so many strange things about you, first you survive the beast who has killed countless Lycans and wolves, next the beast killed a man because of you, surviving the poison that would take less than 10 minutes to take out any Lycan and now feeling mate bond, just what are you?” She inquired with seriousness and I exhaled deeply, asking me held the same question.
