Chapter 25

Svetlana I peeled my eyes open slowly to find myself at the infirmary. The strong smell of herbs hit my nose, temporarily choking me and I inhaled rapidly as the smell slowly evened out. I glanced around to find Zina smiling at me softly and beside her was food. “You’re awake, child.” She muttered and I smiled at her. “Thank you so much.” I whispered as I grabbed the water she extended. I could feel my middle burning intently and I gritted my teeth as I tried to hide my pain. “It’ll take a few days before you stop feeling the pain, I hope the beast will be asleep this time around.” She mumbled pitifully and I flashed her a smile. Whether he was asleep or awake, his existence meant prolonged misery for me. I grabbed the food, eating it ravenously, my stomach growling like I hadn’t tasted food for years. I was breathing heavily as I set down the plate, resting me back on the wall as she began to rub my arm with ointment. My body hurt and her soft hands helped get the ache out. She was still massaging my back when the doors opened, a few guards walked in. In their middle was Astrid, she glanced around with disdain and her eyes fell on me, she scoffed, snarling softly with her fangs bared at me. I swallowed, coiling back while Zina stepped forward protectively. She was like a mother figure and my heart warmed greatly. “This is such an honor, I never thought you would ever grace this place in my lifetime, my lady.” Zina muttered, her head bowed and Astrid scoffed. “Send that thing away, I want to use the infirmary and I won’t breathe the same air as the human.” She retorted, pointing her finger at me and Zina smiled faintly. “I’m sorry but I won’t be able to grant such requests, the human is terribly injured and she needs all the attention she can get. I’m flattered that you want me to treat you but I think it’s best if you head to another infirmary.” She announced politely and Astrid scoffed. “How dare you…” She gritted out, her hands clenched as she glared at Zina who looked unfazed. She wasn’t intimidated by Astrid’s presence. “I have a weak knee, I need to be treated as soon as possible, send the human away.” She insisted, showing a little cut on her knee, it was no different from being scratched with the tip of a knife. Zina smiled faintly, finding her words amusing while I watched with fear. I didn’t want Zina to get into trouble because of me. Astrid looked like she could hurt Zina. “I understand your concerns, my lady but unfortunately I can not do that. You can either have your seat and let me treat you or head to another infirmary, it’s very close and I’m sure you’ll be properly taken care of.” Zina suggested and Astrid’s face turned red, it almost exploded. Her eyes flickered, making me terrified as to how she could have blue eyes one moment and dark red the next. “You dare to reject me because of this thing? Do you know I’m King Nikolai’s betrothed? I can have your head cut off for disobeying my orders. Have you forgotten who my father is? He’s a part of the council, without the help of King Nikolai, I can make your life hell.” She threatened, feeling me with more terror. “I… I can just leave. I think it’s best I leave…” I muttered fearfully and Zina shook her head. “No.” She insisted sternly, flashing me a glare. “I’m well aware of who you are, lady Astrid and I’m sorry but your request can’t be granted. I’m not trying to be rude…” She mumbled and Astrid growled, it was a terrifying sound that made me shiver but Zina wasn’t bothered. Only god knew where she got her bravery from but I was terrified to death for her. “You’re going to regret this… I’ll have you whipped in the square and this place would be reduced to my massage spot… You’ll crawl on the ground for mercy. I’m going to be the queen soon.” She threatened and Zina nodded. “I’m sorry but until then, I have to care for the beast’s lady. She needs treatment urgently. “Don’t get on your high horse, human, the beast is going to crush you soon and I’ll feed your body to my pets and you… this is just the beginning.” She announced, glaring at Zina. “What is going on?” We all turned to the door, shock and fear visible all over our faces when we found King Nikolai walking in through the door. Astrid comported herself instantly, a small smile appearing on her face as she tried to look as humble as possible. “K… king Nikolai.” She stammered as she moved towards him cautiously. “I didn’t know you were back. I thought you would be spending a few days with the wolves.” She mumbled, placing a hand on his shoulder. He looked at me, it was so sudden, I couldn’t bring myself to lower my head. It was strange because I wanted to force myself into the wall and never see him but I found smiled staring at his dark, empty eyes. They have away nothing on his mind, only his disdain was hinted and breathing heavily, I managed to lower my gaze, hoping he doesn’t punish or do a thing to me. “King Nikolai… I’m injured and rather than treat me, this healer has sent me away, she choose the human over me.” She cried out pathetically and Nikolai remained quiet for almost a minute. She whimpered and grumbled, waiting patiently for him to say something and when his lips moved, I was stunned. “Leave, Astrid.” He ordered and her eyes almost popped out. “King Nikolai… Shouldn’t you punish the…” “Leave, Astrid, don’t make me repeat myself again.” He gritted out this time around, his voice bore rage. She had a disappointed look but without an other word, she stormed out, whimpering to herself.
