My heart was in my throat, pounding so heavily that I feared it would explode. I managed to rise, taking light steps back back as I tried to think of a way to escape them.
My head was blank, I couldn’t think of anything and running was impossible, there were skilled runners, I was a weak human with a quarter of their strength.
I swallowed when a dark figure emerged from the bushes.
It was wearing a cloak and standing in front of me, she pushed down the cloak, my eyes widened as I realized it was Astrid.
She had a smirk on her face and I went rigid, knowing it would be hard to get out of this situation, she wanted me dead and it was no secret
“What’s wrong? Are you scared? You don’t have to be, it’ll be as painless as possible, a human like you deserves a painful death but I’ll make sure it’s worth it.” She taunted and my lips quivered as I shook my head slowly.
She burst into laughter, throwing her head back as she circled around me while the beasts who had red eyes growled.
“I heard you called the king your mate, you’re so brave, I haven’t done such because of fear, do you know how many fake mates the king has killed? He’s killed countless wolves and humans but tell me, why didn’t he kill you? Why didn’t he touch you? You’re not special, you’re just like any other human out there, weak, pathetic.” She gritted out with clenched fists and my lips moved but words didn’t come out.
I said nothing and she grabbed my jaw, forcing me to look at her. “What the f**k is so special about you!” She thundered as she hit me hard across the face.
It stung, my eyes watered as I bit my lips, tasting blood, she took a few steps away, inhaling softly before returning.
“Tell me, why can’t the beast kill you? Why is king Nikolai still keeping a human alive? Why did he move into the pack house? What have you done to them? King Nikolai would’ve beheaded you just like he’s done to hundreds of humans but he’s still keeping you alive and I hate it… This is the end.” She announced through gritted teeth as she grabbed my hair.
I swallowed, panting heavily while lowering my gaze. She chuckled, watching me closely.
“Goddess I love to see humans suffer, to watch your glowing eyes go dim slowly as you give up… To watch your body go pale, cold and lifeless.” She whispered, her eyes glowing with bliss.
“Don’t spare her, not a single piece of her should be left, I want no tracks to be left.” She ordered as she pushed me into their midst.
I was surrounded by three gigantic Lycans, they towered over me, prancing around me while Astrid walked away with a cackle.
My insides were filled with terror, I was panting heavily as I tried to move my numb legs, I could barely lift my leg, or any part of my body.
Their fangs were so long and they drooled, their red eyes glowing like they just found meat.
“Argh!” I screamed as the first launched an attack at me, scratching my arm as I evaded him.
The cut ran deep, it cut through my sleeve, his claws were so long and I had about four long blood-covered lines on my arm.
I swallowed, gritting my teeth as the pain shot through my body.
I placed a hand around my arm and just as the second Lycan was about to attack, I heard a loud snarl, drifting our attention momentarily.
It was another Lycan, coming from the forest, was she going to join them? Were they all going to devour me?
Before I could tell what was happening, she let out a loud snarl before it began to attack them, leaving me stunned.
While they were engrossed attacking the Lycan who seemed to be fighting for me or was probably fighting to eat me alone, I crawled out of their midst, hiding behind some trees as I tried to catch my breath.
I was panting heavily, my hand still around my bleeding arm, I wanted to rest for a few seconds before running off to the pack mansion.
But there was something about this Lycan, the way it fought and made sure the others never got the chance to get close to me.
It was warming and I felt my heart tightened, it was like my mother was fighting for me and I felt tears slowly roll down my cheeks.
I never got to experience what it was but it was a beautiful feeling and those who experienced it were lucky.
The Lycan successfully overpowered others, fighting until the rest retreated, now alone with the Lycan, I couldn’t help but wonder if I made the right decision by hiding here.
The Lycan dashed off, making me stunned as I stared at its disappearing back. I sighed heavily, my fears slowly reducing.
Three minutes later, I heard the sound of dry leaves being crushed, I was about to dash off in fear when I felt a soft hand on my back.
“Argh!” I yelled, breathing heavily as I turned around to see Zina. She smiled softly as she shook her head.
She was trying to conceal her laughter and I let out a sigh, my shoulders slumping back.
“You scared me.” I muttered and she shrugged.
“Were you the Lycan who just saved me? The…”
“No, I saw the Lycan run off, I was just coming from a run, are you okay? You’re bleeding, we need to get you to the infirmary.” She announced, her voice high-pitched with concern.
I gritted my teeth, nodding softly. But if she hadn’t saved me, who could it have been?
It wasn’t the beast, humans were hated by everyone and nobody knows me so why would I be saved?
It felt strange and there was only one person I could think of, King Nikolai. I laughed faintly, shaking my head slowly.
It was impossible, the beast was almost double that size, there was no way he’d be that small or come rescue me, mates or not.
This gave me a lot of concern and Zina grabbed my arm, pulling me close.
“First, we’ll report this to King Nikolai, he needs to know that Astrid attempted to kill you.” My eyes widened instantly as I shook my head vigorously.
“No. I don’t want to get into more trouble, please let’s just head to the infirmary, there’s no telling what Astrid would do to me, please…” I pleaded and she chuckled.
