As we started driving, I couldn't help myself and ask
"Mom, why did Sally behave that way when I mentioned the Blackstones?
"Lilly people around these parts don't talk about them. they didn't do anything good to help their small town."
I nodded my head and noticed she was getting angry with my constant asking, so I dropped it and turned on the radio. most of the stations where country music. which I do enjoy. I love how the music tells a sweet story of love or heartbreak. I'm not sure how long we drive, but I saw a huge white sign that says Welcome to Duskwood Falls.
I started getting that uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach while we were driving past the sign. that feeling only got stronger. It was like my body was telling me to get away. I kept looking back in the side mirror like if I was going to see something, the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up. I looked over to my mother, and she seemed at ease driving in the semi dark. The sky was now pinks and had dark blues peeking through. such a breathtaking view. I noticed we were coming up to an intersection. My body was screaming for my mom to blow the stop sign. I looked to the right and saw huge iron gates and a big sign Blackstones industry.
I noticed my mother barely stopped for the intersection. She did what they called a California roll and picked up the speed. maybe I wasn't the only one feeling uncomfortable. I saw my mother glance in the review mirror an I swear her face turned a little pale, she looked straight ahead again only glancing at the mirror one more time as we put some distance from that intersection.
I looked at the side mirror, and my blood ran cold. There was what looked like a man standing off in the distance from where we just was. We had to be about ten car lengths from the intersection. I kept my eyes glued to that mirror. As we put some distance, the figure disappeared from sight. what the heck was that? I asked myself I didn't want to ask my mom and make her nervous or more scared. the uneasy feeling I was feeling moments ago just vanished, like it was never their. I felt normal again, and I relaxed into the seat
"Mom, how much longer?"
"Not too far now, we are almost there. Once we get there, Lilly, you will feel completely at home. that's how Witch's Creek is for our family. It's always been our family's safe haven when things get difficult."
I look at my mother questonly cause I only know the house I grew up in, not some town that I had no clue existed up until last month. I just simply nodded my head. I kept looking outside the window. i saw another sign coming into view, and it said welcome to Witch's Creek in gold script letters.
I was a little surprised. It seemed we were not too far from Duskwood Falls. I feel like it should have been a longer drive. but what do I know about small towns. about a mile up there was another intersection that's when my mother made a left turn and started driving down this extremely narrow road which had forst on both sides you couldn't see anything in front of you if you we to turn you light off. how far on this road now, mom? about a couple miles. I closed my eyes, and I was getting exhausted from starting at the darkness. I couldn't wait till we got to my aunts house.
I wonder what life would bring me here where the people in town friendly, was I going to be able to make at least one friend? I am twenty one and I left my good friends back home, it would be a really boring life to just have my mom and aunt to hang out with plus I wonder what kind of night life was around here what the people my age did for fun, do they have a local club or a place that they can let losses? so many questions are plaguing my mind.
I felt the car coming up to stop, and I opened my eyes. I couldn't believe the small stone house. it was beautiful. The window had the wooden pains going down the middle. I wonder if it's for a show or if the window opens normally or if both sides open outward. The small path leading to the front door is lined with small flowers. The light in the house was dimly lit. The front door was slightly ajar. I guess my aunt was expecting us around this time it's now 9 pm, which wasn't late, but for how many hours we drove, it was enough for me.
we headed to the door with our small belongings since the movers won't be coming till the morning. As we got to the door, my mom called out to my aunt Aunt Maria? it's me, your Terri mom, "I said. I heard laughter from inside and it was getting closer oh dear, like I don't know who you are I'm not that old you! my aunt said I snickered at her response. when the door fully opened, I was shocked. My aunt wasn't a very old woman she looked in her mid sixtys early seventy maybe. she looked like an older version of my mother she has long black hair dark brown eyes that were lit up with happiness at seeing my mother she had to be the same hight as me which I am not tall at all I'm only 5'2 my mother was much taller then I was standing at 5'5. Aunt Maria, this is Lilly, my daughter.
She turned to me and took both my hands and said, "Come in so I could properly look at you." She tugged me inside the hallway and twirled me around and hugged me wow Lilly your pictures that your mom sent me don't do you justice. You're a beautiful young lady. I couldn't help the blush that formed on my cheeks. Thank you, Aunt Maria. come come, let me show you to your rooms so you can get settled in much to do tomorrow morning.
I started looking around her home. The living room was off to the right from the front door, it has a cozy feel to the living room she had a full sofa and a love seat that were black with a wooden little table in the middle, with all kinds of candles ranging from small to large. off to the left was a floor to ceiling book shelf. which was full of books. Then, to the right was the dining room, which was a nice size with a beautiful wooden table and China cabinet. which I noticed was right off from the kitchen. as we continued down the hall, there was the bathroom to the left, my aunt to great at pointing out the rooms as we good from the front of the house it looked small but inside I noticed it was big we passed two rooms which my aunt didn't say what was in there and then she stopped telling my mother that was her room and she told her good night and told me to follow her she brought me to the fars room from all the others an opened the door. Lilly, this will be your room it's big and spacious for a young lady. I walked in and was shocked. The bed was a queens size bed with dark blue bedding and throw pillows. had two night stands and with little lamps on either side. She pointed to the first door, telling me that was a small half a bath and the other door was the closest. I noticed I had sliding glass doors leading outside. I walked over to it and pulled the curtain back, and my aunt was beside me. I saw in the dark a little patio and off in the distance a huge clearing. Lilly, please keep this door locked and don't venture out at night alone. there is a creek not too far from the back of the house, which is extremely deep. I turned to her she looked like she wanted to say more, but didn't she wish me a good night and left me alone.
tomorrow is a new day to check everything out. I was exhausted, and the bed looked invented. I didn't have much with me, so I decided I'll sleep in my bra and underwear once my body hit the bed I felt extremely comfortable an everything the day brought faded away in to nothingness.
