I hear the sounds of faint machines in the back round. My body hurts. I want to scream out in pain but I can't. Everything was just black. I hear some murmur.. Voices. But I can't make them out. What happened? I'm trying to remember. Everything is so fuzzy. I'm lying down. But how? Where am I? Trying to will myself to open my eyes, I fail. More voices. Who is that? I can't quite make out who it is.
I try to open my eyes again. This time they open just a sliver. The light is too bright, it's hurting my eyes. I close them again quickly. Giving it a few seconds, I open them back up a little. It's a little fuzzy. I repeat these steps a few more times before I'm finally able to make out that it's my parents who are standing off to the side. I look around a little and see that I'm in a hospital. I try to call out for them but I can't make any sound. My throat hurts. After a few minutes, I get my parents' attention. Talking with the doctor and my parents, they filled me in on everything that happened.
Apparently, I was hit by a car when I was walking across the street to my car. Scott had run and tried to get me out of the way, getting clipped by the car himself. The doctor says that if he wouldn't have done what he had done, things would have been much worse. I suffered multiple leg fractures, a broken arm and a collar bone. I had to be intubate, which is why my throat hurt. I also flat lined. I was shocked to hear everything.
I was also shocked to learn that everyone had a schedule to spend some time with me. Scott included. I was out for 2 weeks. They had to put me in a medically induced coma due to brain swelling. I don't remember any of this.
2 months later.
P.T. had gone really well. I completed everything that I needed to do. Mom and dad eventually had to go back to work but made sure they took at least 2 days a week to come see me. I have been getting all my homework assignments brought to me by Alex, Sadie, and Scott. Everyone gave me a run down of what happened before the accident because I didn't remember anything. Scott and Alex took care of the list and made sure that the jocks knew to leave us alone. We still haven't figured out who Sadie's stalker is, but the notes were coming more frequently, so she never went anywhere alone. Alex had a new girlfriend. Her name is Samantha. Sadie is taking a break from the dating pool for a while. On my end, Scott and I have been hanging out more.
It's OK hanging out with him, but he has a short temper and has been getting into a lot of fights at school. Being the principal's favorite student, though, means he never gets punished for the fights. I'm not sure what has gotten into him. He has been acting really strange the last couple of weeks. He is supposed to be coming over to talk to me about something. Him saying that just gave me a weird vibe, so I am not looking forward to him coming over. It's currently Friday, so I am also thinking of what to do this weekend, seeing as how I have been stuck in the house for the last 2 months.
Around 6:30, Scott knocks on my front door. I get us a few sodas from the fridge and we sit down on the couch. He stays silent for a few minutes. The silence is starting to get uncomfortable.
"What is it you need to tell me, Scott?" I couldn't take the silence, so I had to say something. Scott took a deep breath, then turned to look at me.
"Ally, I hope you know how much I care about you. I hope I showed you enough over the last 2 months."
" Where are you going with this?
"I'm sorry, but I can't see you any more."
"What are you talking about?"
"It's safer for you that you know as little as possible. Just know that I am sorry." With that, Scott got up and left. I sat there on the couch speechless. We weren't even dating, so what did he mean he can't see me anymore? Like see me at school? Is he moving? I'm so confused. I sent Sadie a text message asking her if she could come over. She replies within a few seconds telling me she will be over in 30.
By the time she gets there, I have already gone through pretty much every scenario in my head as to why Scott was acting so weird. I fill her in on what Scott had said. She stays silent for a moment.
"Sadie, come on, what do you think?"
"Well, I heard a few rumors around school, but I'm not sure how true they are."
"OK, so just tell me."
"Ally....."
"Sadie please, not you too. I am not fragile. I won't break if you tell me."
"OK, fine. Alex heard a few of the jocks saying that Scott has been working for his distant uncle. The one who is connected to the mafia."
"What? That can't be right. Scott said he never wanted that life."
"It's just a rumor, Ally, but Scott has been avoiding Alex and I all day. He hasn't said 2 words to us, and everytime we try to talk to him he walks away."
"That doesn't mean that he has suddenly changed his mind and went down that road."
"You're right, it doesn't. But it does explain his shifty behavior over the last couple of weeks." Sadie grabs my hand, trying to comfort me. But it's no use. Scott told me about his uncle shortly after I got out of the hospital. He had said that he wants to get to know me so he would open up and let me get to know him as well. We talked for hours on my couch, over the phone, and even texted. The last 2 months have been awesome getting to know a different side of him. When I asked him about his family in the mafia, he said he would never go down that road. He wasn't that type of guy. Did he lie to me?
The next week I had seen what Sadie was talking about. Scott was being super sketchy and avoided us like the pleague. He got into 2 fights. One of the fights I had witnessed and over heard him say something about his uncle. I don't believe it. At the end of the fight, Scott stood up and his eyes met mine. I'm not sure what that look on his face was, but after a few seconds I caught myself slowly walking backwards. Scott took a few steps towards me and I turned and walked away. Not giving him the chance to try and stop me.
Any time after that, if I seen him in the hallway, I turned and walked in the opposite direction. No matter if I had a class right there. The entire week was like that. Hearing him talk about his uncle, I knew that Sadie was right. He lied to me and he was in fact now part of the mafia. That thought alone made my stomach queasy.
Come Thursday, I am standing in the hallway by my locker after school. I'm completely zoned out when all of a sudden Sadie appears beside me, grabbing my shoulder. Panick was written all over her face.
"Oh my god, Sadie, what's wrong?"
"There was another note. This time I found it in my math book last period. My math book Ally!!!!!"
"OK, calm down a sec, did you call the detective who is investigating this?"
"No, I literally just walked out of the classroom after having a mini melt down."
"What does the note say?" Sadie takes the note from her backpack and hands it to me. As I'm reading my face pales.
Roses are red, Violets are blue
You can never hide from me
I'll always find you.
I started to panic as I looked around the hall trying to see if anyone was staring. It's just Sadie and myself in the hallway now.
I quickly handed her back the note, still looking around, grabbing her by her arm and pulling her out of the school and straight to my car. I don't give her even a second to protest. I get in lock my door and immediately send Alex a text.
"911, meet at my house now!!!"
Before waiting for a response from him, I start my car, buckle up and drive to my house. On the way there, Sadie sends a picture of the note to the detective also informing him that we are going to my house, then wait for his response. Alex is already at my house waiting for us. We rush inside lock the doors, double check all the windows are locked and fill Alex in on the note.
"This is getting out of hand and the damn police aren't doing anything to f*****g help." Alex says, pacing back and forth in the living room.
"We just have to wait for the detective to get here. We will figure it out from there." The words come out of my mouth but even to my ears, don't sound too reassuring.
"I need some fresh air. I feel like I am suffocating." Ally is fanning herself, trying to catch her breath. She is having a panic attack.
I ordered Alex to go into the kitchen and get her a bottle of water while I go to the hall bathroom and look for something to help her. My brother used to have panic attacks as well, so I was looking to see if any of his pills were still here. When we get back to the living room, the front door is open and Sadie is nowhere to be seen.
"Sadie!!!!" Alex and I went outside, scanning the entire area with no sight of her. Sadie is gone.
